What to wear at a funeral?

Help!?!? My little sis (10) and I need to know what to wear to my great-aunt's funeral on the west coast. We were at karate last night, so my mom packed our clothes, and she said we are going to wear black pants and a long-sleeve shirt, but don't you have to wear something nice like a dress??

Update:

Oh and also I was arguing w/ her, but um, it didn't turn out well.

Update 2:

Ok, I guess I shouldn't have argured w/ her, Thanks guys for helping me out, I guess I'll just go with the pants and top.

Be clean, paying no attention to yourself. God is not a fashion judge. Let your heart be filled with holiness and your eyes remember the glory of all creation. From the simplest flower to the mightiest mountain peak, swept with howling winds that clear away all debris, so too let your soul be clear and lovely as you fondly pay tribute to your dear great-aunt's final farewell.

May she rest in peace, and may the angels attend her, and you and your little sister.

Black pants and a long sleeved shirt will be fine. A dress would be okay - but it is not required. People wear blue jeans to funerals these days. Go with what your mom picked out. It is a funeral - not a fashion show.

I think you should listen to your mom and black pants are acceptable.

Was your mom close to her? If she was, she's feeling down and you should try and be there for her and not pick fights over things that don't matter too much in the big scheme.

Be a good girl and take care of your sister. Enjoy seeing family you may not see often and hopefully see something of the west coast.

    Safe travels.

You could wear a dress. But I wore a skirt and top to the last funeral I went too.

Black pants and a gloomy top, gray, black, or something is fine. It doesn't have to be long sleeve, unless its cold!

You can wear anything that is neat and of course, not sporty or too'loud' in color. The wearing of black and only dark colors is still respectable, but now they say, anything that is simple and not too colorful, is fine. Dresses for girls and women are not necessary. though. Mom packed the right things for you. And... don't argue with Mom, you will never win..LOL!

Sorry for your family's loss, by the way.

Dark, nice clothes are fine. I usually wear slacks and nice shoes and a dark sweater. Most funerals I attend are in the winter, which means I have to dress for warmth. Skirts versus slacks isn't what makes the look. Your bottoms are your base. What matters is nice shoes, top and hair.

  • The last time I went to a funeral it was my grandpa's funeral and I just wore all black. Really it is up to you to wear a dress or not but it usually just has to be black. soooooo... oh yea sorry about your great-aunt

you should just listen to your mom...I'm 23 years old and am not a mom however she does know...you don't need to ask us. A dress could be ok but I always wear a nice pair of dress pants with heels and business casual shirt.

Black pants and a long-sleeved tee should do it, but also you should make sure to keep any accessories low-key. And if the tee is too bright, wear a different one. You don't have to wear all black, but it shouldn't be at all bright.

It's nice to wear a dress, but not nescessary. Pants and a top could be fine also as long as it isn't something as casual as jeans and a tee-shirt I would think.

You can wear a simple sophisticated Black Dress
