What is microchip electrophoresis?

I know that electrophoresis is separating ions in solution with an electrical current, but what's the microchip part all about? Why use a microchip instead of, say, a gel?

The microchip allows you to scale down to very small volumes at comparable concentrations to the gels, so requires very small amounts of analyte, which can be separated very rapidly with high resolution.
