We were told we can paint over window putty when it's still a bit soft. Will it ever harden underneath?

We have a new back door with glass elements, which of course have putty on the outside. When the door was installed, the putty was still a bit soft, but the guy told us we can paint over it with enamel paint, no problem. Which we did. But now, many weeks on, the putty still feels soft underneath when we press the painted surface.

I wonder if it will ever dry? Do we have to start poking holes in the paint for the dampness to escape and to let it dry, or worse, do we have to strip the whole paint from the top and let it dry first and then paint again? Or should we just not worry about it? Any info welcome.

Cheers!

I have glazed many many a window. What the man told you was correct. It sometimes takes as long as a few months to dry out depending on conditions.

He did tell you correct using an Alkyd primer as well. You can paint your top coat anytime. Latex top coat is breathable paint so it will not slow down curing time.
