How safe is Greensboro, NC's Amtrak station?
If I take Amtrak, I'll be stuck at this station for about 6 hours around midnight. I'm a female, traveling alone. How secure is the station? I'd feel alright about doing this if it's secure as an airport, but my understanding is that anyone can come and go as they please. Just don't want to get stuck there with a bunch of bums looking for a handout or anything.

Hi. I am a female in my mid-60s, and I have travelled by Amtrak when I could for many years. My avatar is a picture of me at age 17, and that look is long gone, but I still get hit on occasionally by older men.
I have used the Greensboro station at various hours of the night, and have never thought I had anything to worry about. When I have been there, there was a NC Dept of Transportation staff member on duty, and there was a full time police officer patrolling the building.
People off the street come in to use the rest rooms, and there are a few unsavory characters that come through. I carry pepper spray, a cane with a lead weight in the end, and a mobile phone, and I would suggest all three of those items for any woman who travels alone.
But the DOT staffer and the police are good about keeping an eye on you and they get rid of drunks and crazy people as quickly as they can.
Just to make sure, it would be a good idea to call or e-mail the Greensboro police department in advance and tell them the date and hours you will be there. They can tell you how well patrolled the place will be.
On the whole, I would think you will have a good trip and no big worries.
Godspeed...

I've been through Greensboro on Amtrak. But didn't get off at the station.
From what I recall it's just a station and nothing more. The problem (as you mentioned) is that there is no security or restrictions whatsoever. Anybody can walk/drive up to the station at any time.
Best bet would be try to get an affordable motel someplace. Even an all night restaurant like Denny's or a Waffle House would be better (probably cheaper as well). Just someplace where other people are around and can keep an eye on you.

It's not the greatest area. It's dirty and there are a lot of poor people sleeping on the streets. But it's not necessarily unsafe. There are some "nice" looking areas that have higher crime. Hobos are generally harmless. Chinatown is very populated and safe at night.

I think it should be fine. There should be at least one staff member present at all times. Just mind your own business and don't interfere with anyone and I think people will leave you alone. And if you feel uncomfortable you can always call a taxi and go to a more populated place like a Denny's.
