Is it advisable to get a motorcycle?

I want to get a motorcycle. I'm 5'2, never riden before but really want to. I need some kind of vehicle and I'm thinking that a motorcycle would be a good choice.

I don't have alot of money but I figure I could save on insurance if I get a bike.

If I were to get one what would be a good brand and model for someone small? And what do I need to know before buying one?

Before buying one, check for motorcycle safety classes. I would deff take that class before buying one! That way you can ride one before you buy one to make sure it's for you. Then since your small, I would buy a Kawasaki 250 Ninja and you can get a lowering kit for them. With the lowering kit it should run around $4500 and deff buy new! But I love motorcycles! So much fun, very manuverable, and the 250's are cheap on price and insurance.

Trust me starting on a 650 is no day in the park.

The throttles are extremely touchy when you launch the bike.

They WILL throw you right off the back if you dont hold on tight and accidentily yank the throttle back too fast.

You have to respect the power on anything over a 500cc.

They weight more, and aren't so forgiving.

But if you have common sense and take it easy, you'll be fine.

Starting on a 250cc is the best idea.

They are very light, and you really have to crank the throttle to get them moving fast.

They aren't exactly slow either though, most will do 0-60 in 6 or 7 seconds, and hit 14's in the 1/4 mile.

Not bad for a little 250.

But you have to keep the throttle cranked alot on these bikes, since they make most of their power in the Middle to Higher RPM's.

If you have never been on a bike and with your small frame I would suggest you get a scooter. Yamaha has some nice ones you should check out. They are either small or large depending on what you want to ride. I would not recommend any type of motorcycle until you learn how to handle a scooter, especially a Ninja.

My daughter is about your height and rides a 250cc Yamaha V Star. Cruiser style bikes cost less for a young person to insure than a sport bike.

    Take the MSF course.

cruiser bikes would be best... the sport bikes usually are too high to balance comfortable during stop.. however all motorcycles can be lowered and some have lowering kits that can lower more than usual. take the motorcycle safety course... if u pass u get license afterwards..
