Books on the Big Bang Theory?

I want to learn about cosmology in general, about the nature of the singularity, about theories as to the origin of the singularity (if it makes sense to talk about it this way, I mean bubble universes, black hole universes, eternal universes, multiverses, etc), and only to a lesser extent about the history of the science. It seems that the only books I can find on the topic decide to tackle issue from a historic perspective; I just want to know the facts of the science, and the relevent hypotheses.

What books would you recommend?

A simple search on Amazon.com will give you descriptions on what exactly the books are about. Some encompass everything you wanted, others focus on a specific topic

    "Big Bang" by Simon Singh

"Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking

"The Inflationary Universe" by Alan Guth

"The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene

"The Black Hole War" by Leonard Susskind

"Many Worlds In One" by Alex Vilenkin

    EDIT:

@ thejacko7: Forgot that one. I am actually reading it now, which is why I didn't write it above

The "Big Bang" is the term used to name the current scientific model about how the universe began. It is based on many scientific observations, and will continue to be modified to fit new facts, or thrown out, if it shoudl happen that new facts contradict it so badly that the basic claim (namely, that there was a point in time at the be ginning of the universe where all the matter was concentrated at a single point, and it has all bene expanding outward since then) is falsified. Genesis is one Creation story told by one culture. Lots of cultures made other stories. As opposed to being based solely on what the evidence suggets, religious stories are also written so that the people in charge of the culture can justify why the culture is the way it is. In its specifics, the Creation story in the bible is completely out of whack with what the evidence tells us about the origins of the universe, and life on this planet. For starters, it took longer than 6 days. All the plants didn't just appears one day, followed by all the animals the next. And that's just a couple of points. There are many others.

The first serious book I read about physics was "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene.

It covers Everything. It starts off introducing some very interesting and essential concepts in Relativity and Quantum Theory, then it moves into big questions in cosmology such as the origin, shape, and future of the universe. It talks deeply about the big bang theory and talks about the best current models of how the initial singularity came into existence.

It's full of knowledge but also VERY entertaining. Greene is a great author and he uses simple, even funny analogies to get his concepts across. Even people who are new to cosmology would have no trouble understanding it. I couldn't put it down.

I would recommend you read the statement below from a large group of scientists and academics who say that the "Big Bang" never happened . The "Big Bang" is the biggest myth in the history of science and will be shown to be an embarrassment in the history of cosmology by future generations.

Anyhow, read the statement, think about what it says, then decide for yourself, above all do not simply follow mathematicians who pretend to be Physicists

Many Worlds in One - by Alex Vilenkin.

Great read as it explains everything as best it can without being too over the top scientific, so you really just need a basic knowledge of things to understand.
