Iron keeps spitting sand-like grit, what's wrong?

I've got a Tefal Aquaslide 160 and it's worked fine (the few times we've used it), but now it keeps spitting out sand-like grit with the steam. The grit doesn't stain and wipes off easy but is making ironing very difficult, and I'm sure it's abrasiveness is scratching garments too. Any idea if the iron is at the end of its tethers or if this can be fixed, cleaned or something else? Thanks!

It is most probable calcium. You can use CLR but that is dicey as it can harm the iron. Just rinse it out well with water. Distilled water it the right thing to use but bought distilled water is quite expensive. I use water from the dehumidifier. If you don't have one someone you know is bound to have one. That costs nothing. We have been doing it for many years with excellent results.

Probably 'lime scale' from hard water.

Try running some vinegar through the water/steam circuit of the iron.

It should dissolve the lime scale.

Its probably just calcium from using hard water.Use distilled and it should go away soon.If you don't think it will hurt the elements you could try a calcium dissolve like "CLR" but you might ruin it.
