Silent Spring history project?

I have to do a final project for my US History class, involving reading a book and then doing something with the knowledge you've gained.

I chose Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, and I was looking along the lines of planting stuff or doing something outside. Any ideas? Anything related to soil, biodiversity, etc. I just can't think of anything specific.

Plant some heirloom tomatoes. Most of the plants available at commercial nurseries these days are hybrids leading to a lack of biodiversity. another great book about biodiversity is called First the seed.

There is also a first the seed foundation on line.
