Is walking in New York City during the day between the Empire State Building and Ground Zero considered...?

to be feasible or safe? We will be leaving in a few days for a trip to the city, and our hotel is right at the Empire State Building. We would like to avoid taxi's and subways if possible. The plan is for us to walk to Ground Zero first thing Sunday morning, see the site, and explore the city as we spend the day making our way back to the hotel. We were thinking of sticking primarily to Park Avenue and Broadway. Oh, if anyone has any idea how long it would take to walk those three-ish miles that would be great information to. Thanks in advance!

Update:

Thanks so much for all of the responses!! We will still probably walk even though I am aware that it is quite a walk. We really want to get to explore as much of the city as possible although we may consider taking the buses that someone mentioned. Just as an FYI. My concern with safety is not because it is New York. I happen to be from a a smaller city, and I know that there are areas that it's just not smart to walk through. Since I am unfamiliar with this particular city, I just wanted to make sure that the section of the city that we are planning on walking through is not one of those areas. I would have the same concerns with any city that I was going to visit regardless of the size or reputation. Once again, thanks for all the help!

It's both safe and feasible. How long it takes depends on the time you take to view the scenery. You'd be passing through or near Gramercy Park, Washington Square Park, Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Chinatown and the Business District, among other sites. I've never tried walking the whole distance but it can be done in an hour and a half.

You wrote, "if anyone has any idea how long it would take to walk those three-ish miles..."

Well, if you walk at 3 miles per hour, which is the average walking speed of adult humans, by the way, then it will take... one hour!

Seriously, though, yes, it's a do-able walk, BUT, a lot of it is through rather boring residential areas and boring commercial areas, so I would strongly recommend that you take the buses (see link, below), which are safe and clean and easy to ride, and, best of all, will let you SEE some of our marvelous city as you travel around in it, as opposed to the subway, where you're stuck inside a pitch-black hole in the ground.

    Good luck!... ☺

The subway would be soooo much easier- then spend some time around the soho area too...and don't forget Wall Street...

Totally safe. I've walked from the soho area to the Rockefeller Plaza at 2 a.m. in the morning and there were cops every 30 yards it seemed, and everywhere is very well lit. The daytime is even safer...

If you want to explore the city, of course it safe. Beside, New York City is a lot safer now than it used to be some 20 years ago. You'll be fine.

    Good luck
