Horse slaughter poem?
So, I'm doing an English project and I've decided to do mine on horse slaughter. For a section of it we have to write a poem at least 30 lines long.. The only opinion I've got so far is off my dad, and of course, he would say it was lovely. Even though, my intention was to make it sad. This is NOT a cry for attention, I genuinley want your advice. And just to add.. I am NOT a natural born poet, infact, it has always been my weak point. A little advise would be great....
You loved me once,
I loved you back,
We went together,
Like salt and pepper,
But you moved on,
And I promise I won’t forget,
The times we thought would last forever,
How could something so beautiful,
Go so badly wrong?
I need you now more than ever,
If only you knew...
If only you could see…
I love you now,
I loved you then,
I will love you always,
Until the very end,
Keep me in your mind,
Add me to your prayers,
Promise me you’ll never forget,
All of the memories we shared,
The sun goes down for another horse,
Another life,
Another future,
Each minute, each hour,
Another horse takes it’s last steps,
It’s final bight of hay,
They see a room,
They see a man,
They see a gun,
They hear their feet tremble on the floor,
They hear a shot,
But then, they neither see nor hear no more.
Thankyou Alisia and Ouch! It's a subject that's really close to me and I think it is important to raise awareness, because it's just not right the way we lose all respect and treat our animals in such a disgusting and disgraceful way. Thankyou so much ♥
Mountain L: I did spell bight wrong! I noticed that when I wrote up my neat version. It's creepy, you and me think alike. I did put "A dog may be a mans best friend, but a horse is a womans" in my discursive writing. Thanks for the advise I will deffinately try to change it♥
I did it again...bite.
Thekittenators; It really is awful the way we treat an animal that is so close to so many of our hearts. Such a loyal, beautiful creature deserves all our care and attention. When doing my research for this, I couldn't believe some of the things I read. My first horse was slaughtered against my will and I bear her in mind and hope she is one of the last it happens to. This is simply not right. I am refusing to sell any of my babies incase this happens to them. R.I.P millyyy ♥
Amber: I really wanted it to rhyme, I love rhyming poems. I did have a version of it that rhymed but it sounded too happy and cheesey. If you can think of anything like this that rhymes I'd really appreciate it. ♥♥
Kendra.. I'm just saying, we have no evidence that horses cannot love, so, no offence, but don't correct me if you have nothing to back it up.
Jean.. I know I spelt it wrong, I copied and pasted this from my draught, which I hadn't corrected "bight" in. Thanks for pointing it out though♥
Isabelle - Thankyou! I'm making changed to it noww. See, I need you guys! And yeah I read that it's illegal which is why most of the horses are being shipped off to Mexico.
Bruce; I think you're incredibly heartless! There is a very good reason horse slaughter is illegal. There is a HUGE difference between putting a horse down and slaughtering it. If any of my horses were too sick to carry on, I wouldn't even consider having them inhumanely shot in the head, or hit with a hammer till unconsious, only to be turned into dog meat! Do a bit of research yourself, and you will see it's not all fun and games. And no offence BABE but I do know what I'm talking about. I have been researching this disgusting topic for 3 years now and have tried to raise awareness of the way we treat our animals.
Bruce: I forgot to say, when you give me hard evidence that horses are incapable of love, I will respect you, but until then stop correcting me when you cannot back up your own point.
20 questions:
What happened to my mare..
She was the most beautiful horse I ever saw, a grey with an ever so slightly fleabitten chest. She was an Irish Sports Horse, 16.2hh ex police. I loved her to peices! The lovliest most gracious creature, but with that lovely mare spark. I had been keeping her on livery to a stable, everyone there would make a fuss of my darling.. Eventually, the cost of keeping her grew too high so I sold her to the stables. All was not lost, I could still ride her, but I just had to pay to, which was cheaper than feeding her and keeping her alive. I was going to a show on her the day after I had a lesson on her, so I asked if they'd keep her inside for me. We got her all snuggled up in her new rug, and she was next to her supposed friend. This horse had a very ichy foot so would

Yes, anything about horse slaughter is sad, especially a rhyming poem about a horse's personal experience.

Its very good. I especially like the 2nd section. For the 1st section i would suggest putting in at least one line to let the readers know your talking about a horse, not a person. They might not see the connection between the friendship and the horse getting slaughtered. Maybe put something like.
"They say a dog is a mans best friend,
but it is my horse I will love to the end"
(I know it kind of sucks but im not a poet either.) Just a suggestion!
Otherwise great job!
P.S. You spelled bite wrong! Sorry im totally OCD about that stuff!

Good for you! Ignore the rewrite. Horse slaughter isn’t a necessary evil. It’s just evil. Horses are not bred or raised as food animals. If owners don’t want the accountability of responsible ownership, then don’t own a horse. If you want to send your animals to slaughter, then raise cows.
Closing the slaughter houses did not end slaughter. Since there is nothing stopping anyone from sending their horse to slaughter, the statement that horses are being abandoned and starved has nothing to do with the plants closing. But slaughter supporters don’t want facts only to keep repeating propaganda hoping someone will buy it.
Instead of promoting slaughtering the victims of over breeding, why not work with breeders and teach them the concept of supply and demand?

1: Horses are incapable of love. You are confusing respect and basic instinct for a stronger emotional connection.
2: You have the process of slaughter completely wrong.
Here is a rewrite
You fed me once but now we're too many,
There is no food because you haven't a penny,
People keep breeding,
But don't bother reading,
They don't know the truth,
They're dim in their youth.
If it wasn't for slaughter,
We'd be given no quarter,
I'd rather be dead,
Then continue unfed,
Their misplaced ideals,
Just heightens my squeals,
As I plead for an end,
To this misguided trend.
Please legalise slaughter,
Don't listen to your teen daughter,
End my life's pain,
Don't make it a campaign,
Just let it restart,
If you have a kind heart.
Slaughter is a good thing. There are too many horses. Because of the closure of slaughter houses there is rampant over population which results in horses being abandoned and left to starve. If you really gave a sh*t about them you'd do your research and realise that it's one of those things in life that we call reality. Slaughter is a necessary evil and no damn poem is going to change that.
Vicki Tobin: I am not the one spewing sensationalist bullshit from my every orifice.
EDIT: Bruce. Who the hell is Bruce. My username is Bucephalus. Bucephalus as in the famous mount of Alexander the Great. One of the most famous horses in the world.
You want proof then I'll give it to you.
Read Fisher "Romantic Love: A Mammalian Brain System for Mate Choice"
OR
Gladwin "Latency and the Equine Subconscious"
OR
Ask any well reputed animal behaviourist and they will tell you exactly what I have said.
Furthermore I note with interest that you don't bother to pay any heed to the basic facts of slaughter because i don't share your juvenile emotional ideal of "Mah horsie luvs me"
I love horses but I'm not naive enough to believe that my horse has the same cognitive reasoning as a human being. It has been proven in countless academic and scientific studies that they do not.

sorry if its to personnel... but what happened to your first horse?
BTW The poem was beautiful. I loved reading it and it touched my heart! I wouldn'tt change a thing!. Its cool not knowing what your talking about in the beginning but realizing at the end! A+ for sure!

I love it! But like the other answers said in the first half you should add that it's about a horse and not a person.
And I'm doing a research paper on it! Today I was aruging with my sub and then he started asking what I did riding wise and was like and your still alive. Like noo I'm really not I'm just a ghost.

This is sooo good. I think you should tell who is thinking this in the first part. Also, kittenators- it IS illegal to slaughter horses is the USA now....

Thats is actually really good!
The only thing that bugged me was that it had a rhyme at beggining but it didnt carry on.
but i love the ending.. it really makes you think. And it really touches you.
Its fab!

Well, in my opinion I think it would be good for your classmates to understand things like this, I think this would be a great commercial I can invision it! I love it.

thats really good!!!! its not like morbidly upsetting, but it doesnt sugar coat it either! idk if you need a song for this project, but the song "cold as you" by taylor swift can also be applied to this (well, maybe more abuse than slaughter, but)...just thought id share that song incase it helps! good luck on your project, im sure youll rock it!! =]
