Calling all green thumbs, help!?

I have a draceana marginata plant called Garth who is awesome and i need some help with him. Recently i found he is being being attacked by mealybugs (wooly aphids) so i ran to the net to find answers. I don't have time or money for expensive perticides so i mixed up some tabasco, hot sauce, dish wash and water according to tips from a website. I also removed his leaves that were badly infected by the little blighters and now he looks rather bare and sad. This morning i checked him and i saw a couple of dead bugs sitting on his leaves so i think it's working.

Have i done the right thing? and how do i prevent infestation in the future.

Note he is mostly and indoor plant and i put him outside on sunny days to get some extra light.

use methylated Spirit on cotton buds, remove dead leaves in warmer weather put outside and encourage ladybirds/ladybugs they eat eggs and adults (young ladybirds can look a little like mealybugs check!)

Do NOT over water or underwater, feed the plant in the growing season (spring), Pot on if root bound (check) to the next sized pot.
