What books of the Bible to read?

I've been a christian for pretty much my whole life, but studying the bible in depth hasn't been a regular part of my day. I would do small devotionals and such, but I've wanted to, lately, go more in depth and perhaps read a chapter or two a day. I tried doing the Bible in a Year plans, but I found myself sppedreading the Bible, which, in my opinion, is worthless. I'm looking for some suggestions of perhaps a book of the Bible I should go to to read 1-2 chapters a day and savor it over and over in the day to get more out of it. Any suggestions?

    I've been reading one chapter of the old testament and one chapter of the new testament each day just before bedtime. Start with Genesis chapter one and Matthew chapter one. It works for me.

    Personally, I'd rather focus on reading and studying just a few scriptures within a chapter each day, instead of trying to reach a quota, unless the book itself is just one short chapter. The point is to take the time to notice certain phrases, promises, or words that may "jump out" at you that went unnoticed before, and perhaps can link to other scriptures in either Old and/or New Testament text. It's this manner that I've learned lessons about the Christian life by the Holy Spirit. He is the Person whom Jesus said will guide the believer into all truth. As you study, you can Google for details about words, names of places, gods, rulers, customs, etc. Biblegateway.com is a good source for viewing scriptures in different translations. Biblos.com has a variety of in-depth study options available.

    So, you can start with the book of St. Matthew, read part of a chapter, and ask yourself what I can learn from this? Memorize, review, reflect and practice what's given as applicable. If you don't "see" anything at that moment, you just might end up surprised at a future study of the same passage(s). Maybe the next day, slowly read a few scriptures from a chapter in Genesis and review, reflect, etc. Continue alternate daily reading the New Testament/Old Testament chapters or according to your time allowance, maybe both in one sitting

    It also helps to pray and meditate around what you've studied. Nighttime reading works best for some people when there may be fewer distractions.

    The best reading for these times is First John;

    1 and 2 Thessalonians

    I used to be a Christian and I feel like I'd be wrong for not telling you this. I think you should read books like exodus and leviticus which talks about very very nasty things that god tells people to do. If you're ok with these things then you're a true christian. I'm not trying to be funny btw. My parents don't even believe me when I talk to them about these things because they don't read the bible. To be a true christian means to accept the good as well as the bad. I can't do that.

    Personally, I try to read five chapters a day. I just keep reading the Bible over and over again. I don't always manage to do five, but that's my plan.

    If you are going to read less, just start with the Gospels and work your way through the New Testament.

    revelations. seriously, that's some damn good reading,this is coming from an atheist, and its genuinely enjoyable reading. I reckon they were just thinking, 'you know, this book, needs more dragons in, and some massive wars and damnation and wars between huge forces of angels... hey,I know this guy, he had a really awesome dream about this stuff, lets put that in! that'll boost sales!'

    but yeah, joking aside, revelations is brilliant.

    although, most of its fairly mediocre really, I mean if you're going to go in with fantasy reading you should probably try something a bit more, well, enjoyable? its a bit grim, the message seems to be death death death, suffering, pain, death, more pain, eternal damnation, oh, and a little bit of, if you worship me I'll let you off tacked on the side. Oh and a lot of hatred in there too.

    Try Genesis then Revelations. The beginning and the end. Then, you can try Matthew. That was the first book I got all the way through. It's very readable.

    I would recommend starting with the Gospels and the Epistles and then move on the the Old Testament.
