What did I see??? Can't explain it, can you?
I saw a glowing, sparkling ball of white light racing downwards and diagonally across the sky. It seemed to bright and way too close to be a distant star.
I noticed it and then it dissipated and it was light orange. It evaporated very quickly or at least I think it did. I drove in my truck to see if I could see signs of a landing, crash, or related activity.
I didn’t see anything afterwards. Told my friend about it because he was talking to him on my cellphone at the time it happened. Told him I never saw anything like it ever. Then came in and Googled and that’ how I saw your post. I am in Columbus, Ohio. This happened on 12/9/2011 approximately 11pm

It could have been a meteor. I've seen green ones and reddish orange besides the usual white ones. I saw one in Michigan streak completely across the sky, twice burning off an outer shell before the core landed in Rochester. When a shell burns off or explodes, it takes a few seconds for the newly exposed layer underneath to heat up enough to glow and be visible again. The color depends on what it's made of. Most don't survive entry. Reports of other sightings depend on others happening to look up during those seconds -- and being interested enough to tell anyone.
Or it was ice from a plane in the stratosphere, high enough up to still catch the setting sun.
