Vegans :D can any of you fantastic people answer this? go on...?

So here's the question; Does being vegan change the way our brains work? Because what i have noticed in the last seven years is that i CARE, sometimes too much. Eating animals, perceiving killing one seems so alien yet i once ate meat with no thought. I watched some of a fishing show and the comradery, thrill of the catch and skills totally skipped over my head and i felt ill. I was thinking "Don't they see that struggling for air? do they care that it's alive and belongs in the sea? how can killing something make you so happy?" I used to watch that show (hunting too) happily but now i find it so odd. Has being vegan changed the way my brain perceives animals? hunting and killing ETC?

I find it hard to express this to omnivores when they ask me because i really feel that you need to have the whole way you think and view the world changed, is this true? Thanks in advance :)

Update:

Do you realize that eating mostly as herbivores actually preserved our species more than once? in fact we are more likely to live and survive on this earth longer if we reduce or stamp out flesh foods all together. Do the math, do some research :p

Update 2:

Deer Hunter! i didn't mean to offend you dude, sheesh lighten up. Also it was a question to vegans...i'm not arrogant and don't put myself above other but I DO believe i have made a life changing discovery. Almost all of my friends eat meat, several of them hunt it was just asking about how being vegan has made the idea of meat seem so odd and strange. Now get of YOUR high horse Mister :D

I don't think it "changes" the way the brain works, maybe it changes your thoughts from the brain, like your overall feelings and morals towards animals. I'm not a neurologist so don't take my word for it though :PBelieve me, you are not the only one that cares A LOT. I go out of my way to save little critters around the house from getting vaccumed up by my dad.

I ate meat with no thought either. It's just kind of how you are raised :/ You don't really think of it. Even more weird was that actually had a cow and we sold him off for meat....I think he is still in our freezer >.> I wrote a whole poem of regret about that.

Oh my gosh...I know how you feel about the fishing thing....when I first learned about vegetarianism I had to come on a fishing trip with my family. I hated it so much. I refused to catch any fish and I was pretty much a bismal to have around :P This is coming from the girl who, when younger, caught around 60 some fish in one day at a resort with a big lake. Just learning about vegetarianism through lots of great websites and videos, seeing how those animals were killed and really understanding for the first time, all of the pain they go through, changed everything for me.

It is hard to express veganism to omvnivores as they have typically been on fishing trips, some have even hunted....so it's hard for some to see where you are coming from. It's not really until they see actual footage of factory farms and hear the screams of the animals themselves that it kicks in for some. That's why you kind of have to offer to show them what goes on. :P I know I leaflet vegetarian pamphlets to people. I will also lend people my Earthlings DVD. Some will refuse to look at the information, I know my friends are like that...really tells me alot. They obviously know that something is wrong. They refused to look at a "Pay Per View" video of factory farms at a veg fest. Shame, they could have gotten a dollar had they watched it then gotten some vegan pizza that was offered for a dollar.. I still love my friends though. You just have to move on from those people and put your efforts to people who are more open minded and want to do the right thing. :P

Lol I like your part about "I do believe I have made a life changing discovery!" Me too man, xD that's exactly how I feel about it. I swear veganism has opened the door to so many things for me. I am now more concerned about environmental issues and humanitarian issues. Those things just came along over time with my vegansim. I realized how all the problems of the world were connected, and while veganism may not be the "sole" answer, it sure is a pretty good game plan :P

Hi, I am not a vegan but I understand exactly what you mean. Yes, KILLING an and animal must seem wrong, but don't you think that that is part of the food chain? If humans didn't fish or hunt, we wouldn't exist! I do not have anything against vegans or vegetariens, but it is all natural. I suggest not watching those types of shows anymore!

I think it's just because if you eat meat all the time and have done so since before you can remember you just accept it as a normal thing to do and regard animals as food only. Certain animals that is. But once you dont do it for a while you can see it for what it is. That's all.

I agree with the questioner...becoming vegan has changed my perceptions in some of the same ways, and I am thankful for it.

I agree with you too. We are confronted with the whole subject on an almost daily basis; we revisit our thoughts on the issue all the time, so it's often at the forefront of our minds. Don't worry about the antler man - he has no life and sits waiting to pounce on questions like this; takes every opportunity to expose the chip on his shoulder: "those nasty vegans are constantly thinking they're better than me".

I doubt the fish is struggling for air. I think it's struggling for water. Animals eat animals in the wild, so it's perfectly natural for humans to eat animals as well. If you don't want to and feel wrong in doing so, you don't have to eat animals. If that kind of show makes you unhappy, don't watch it. Don't assume you are superior somehow because you think it's wrong. I have nothing against vegetarians or vegans. I was a vegetarian for five years. I just don't think people are any better or worse based on whether they eat animals or not. Let people live the way THEY feel is right.

We know. That is why we carry a club to kill it.

It changed your perception the way ordinary Germans changed their perception of Jews during the 1930s and 1940s. Brainwashed.

What you see as fish struggling for air, I see as people trying to feed themselves. Living in the relatively rich and abundant Western world, you are blinded by the fact that your abundant choices for food is not enjoyed by everyone else. Your comment "..in fact we are more likely to live and survive on this earth longer if we reduce or stamp out flesh foods all together..." is pointless and arrogant to those whose choice is to eat or starve to death.

You can think however you want, its doesn't make my way of thinking wrong.

You act as if you have come to some life changing epiphany that others have not realized yet. All you really have is a different opinion. Don't try to make too much of it. It only solidifies most omnivores stereotypes of vegans. Which is arrogant, self-righteous people up on their pedestals looking down at others.

Do you realize that eating mostly as herbivores actually preserved our species more than once? LOL How-bout some proof to back up your statement.
