What is a good first time ACT score?

I got my scores from the ACT test I took. My scores were:

Composite score: 25

English: 24

Math: 24

Reading: 26

Science: 25

Combined english/ writing: 23

Are these horrible, average, or good for the first time? How can I improve my scores?

A 25 is a good score, especially for your first ACT. With those scores, you'll be able to gain admission to some decent state schools (e.g University of Kansas, Arizona State University, etc.) and small liberal arts colleges, assuming you have a decent GPA.

The best advice I can give you is to purchase a comprehensive ACT prep book (e.g. Barron's, Princeton Review, etc.) and just work your way through that; these books present the material you need to review, show you test-taking strategies, and provide you with practice exams.

    Best of luck!

For a first time test, it's pretty good. The national average for the ACT in general is a 21, and some people take 3 tries to get there, so it's great that you're already above that mark. As a normal score, it's not bad either, but you probably want to score higher if you want to apply to private schools (27+), otherwise you'll mostly be dabbling with middle tier public schools that are usually better known for their athletics or just not known very well at all outside of the state they're based in.

    That's a really good score!

If you take the ACT again your score will probably go up, just because you now have experience. Taking a prep class and some online stuff from sites will help your scores too.

But you have nothing to worry about, that's a really good score.

that's pretty good! i got the same score as you the first time i took the act. you can improve your score by doing act tests inside the book once a week, it'll really help for english, reading, and science. for math, i would recommend taking algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, and trigonometry in school prior to retaking the act test.

If you plan on going to college, your scores are rather pathetic..... and only puts you in the 73-percentile ranking among high school kids planning on attending college (thus eliminating the dumb kids).
