2009 mac book pro update.?

i am trying to update my macs software, i believe that right now i have 10.5.8 snow leopard. what do i need to up grade to. i tried to update to 10.6 but it says the disk image is not recognized.....what do i do

u talking about two diffident thing ur software is the programs u put on, & the other is ur OS. u only do it will a disc with a OS on it, u have to buy it:)

10.5 is Leopard.
You need to buy Snow Leopard (10.6)...
