Several questions about Manga?

Sorry ahead of time for my misuse of certain terms. I have almost no manga knowledge.

I was reading about the creator of One Piece being sick and how the series was delayed until he recovered. From what I read, the series is released weekly.

Now, is it that way because of Shonen Jump's schedule, or because of the writer's preference to work weekly? It is possible to move it to monthly with regards to the writer's health?

After reading American comics for years, it seems stressful to release a 20 page chapter week after week.

Update:

To clarify, I am aware Shonen Jump is an anthology magazine that has multiple series running. The revised question should be "Why don't they move One Piece over to Monthly Shounen Jump?" I didn't mean to insult the other series.

To give a parallel example to Oda, famed comic writer Peter David suffered a stroke early this year, but he still continues to write Marvel's X-Factor. So I do understand a writer wanting to continue his own series.

I'm more curious over the week by week releases more than anything. To me, it seems to be daunting for the artists to produce 20 pages in 7 days.

    >Now, is it that way because of Shonen Jump's schedule, or because of the writer's preference to work weekly?

That's Shounen Jump's schedule. The magazine runs weekly. The formal name of the magazine is Weekly Shounen Jump. Pretty self explanatory.

    > It is possible to move it to monthly with regards to the writer's health?

No. Because One Piece is not the only thing in the magazine. There are 19 other currently running titles. Hunter x Hunter is one of them but has been irregular since 2006 so even if we don't include that title, you're basically saying that 18 other manga should be forced into slow release just for One Piece.

Also, monthly releases of other manga exist because they do longer chapters as they don't work to be as episodic. 60 pages per chapter.. That's what Monthly Shounen Jump is for.

Now you might ask "why don't they move One Piece over to Monthly Shounen Jump" and the answer is because Oda is sick. It's not like he's dying. He's going to get better and continue working on One Piece like he has since 1997.

Yes, One Piece has been running for 16 years. So there's no reason to demote him for getting sick. Also, a lot of his popularity stems for the frequent releases. It's like TV shows. You'd have more viewer ratings with a show that comes out every Monday to keep people with it and eager for the next in a few days rather than a show that comes out once a month and a large portion of people forgetting to catch it since it's on the back of their mind.
