RPMI vs. DMEM for Contamination Test? (10 pts)?
My group prepares a large number of aliquots of Serum, reagents, etc. for scientists working in our company. After aliquoting each substance we perform a contamination test by taking a small amount of what we aliquoted and placing it in DMEM and RPMI to see if anything grows in it. In order to save time we would like to only use one of these media for our contamination tests and I wanted to know which of the two would be a better choice (is better for the growth of potential contaminants)

I am going to be dead honest with you. Mostly DMEM is used globally to my understanding. I have used it last year in my undergrad. class and it worked well. Even at research facilities people use DMEM more than RPMI that I have heard of. Trust me DMEM is the way to go. You can go wrong because it provides with a very high concentration of amino acids, vitamins and glucose.
