What about these (offensive) bible passages?
Hello,
I've recently discovered a number of passages in the bible from various websites that say a lot of really misogynistic stuff. such as (but CERTAINLY not limited to):
"I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet." (1 Timothy 2:12)
"Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord." (Ephesians 5:22)
They are certainly real bible quotes. Are the followers of the bible actually supposed to heed these words? Isn't the bible supposed to be the word of god? are these in some other (more acceptable) context in the bible or are they supposed to actually mean what they say?
Thanks for the responses! To clarify, I personally am not offended- I would just think that these views would offend many people in today's society.
I realize these ideas were applicable to life 2000 years ago. But as the word of god, shouldn't the bible be applicable to all times? How can people justify ignoring god's words if that is their faith?
'Loyal Love' I realize that the bible also has tons of good stuff to say as well. I'm just asking for people's opinions about these specific quotes.
ROBERT- That's more the answer I'm looking for. I thought the whole bible was supposed to be "the word of god". So I guess that explains how most christians ignore the quotes I referenced. So are there any parts of the bible that are actually supposed to be the direct word of god?

This passage is written by Paul (aka Saul of Tarsus). Paul was a woman hater. It is his personal opinion. We should not take this passage and the writings of Paul seriously. Nobody considers Paul seriously except some extreme groups.
Jesus never considered women inferior to men as Paul did. Jesus always taught women important things in life. He held them at par with men. The teaching of Jesus is important to all of us irrespective of our religion. He taught about God, God's kingdom, and the only way to God's kingdom. Jesus taught us that the only way to enter God's kingdom is by doing what God wants us to do here on earth. The teaching of Jesus is recorded in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Read these 4 books and understand the mind of Jesus. The mind of Jesus reflects the mind of God.
Please note that Bible is a single book. It is a heterogeneous collection of 66 books written over thousands of years by different authors, addressed to different people.

Yeah, that plus a load of stuff supporting keeping slaves.
The Bible was written a long time ago. The civilised world has grown up since then. I stress the word "civilised".
@NonRegulariusSineYamis: "It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid." (Luke 16:17 NAB)

The Bible was written about 2000 years ago in a man superior society. Yes, it might read different if it was wrote today.

They meant what they said to the women in the church in the first century, they are not edicts for behavior in any other culture.
In first century culture, especially in the area of Asia Minor, women were second class citizens, usually with no education. Those coming into the church were logically instructed not to teach or be in charge, also, the way they dressed was prohibitive because in that area, to be dressed up and flaunt jewelry said that you were a temple prostitute or a follower of one of the pagan religions headed by a female deity, and neither put followers of Christ in a good light.
No one ever brings out the other scriptures where Paul instructs the church that women and men are supposed to be equals in God's sight and in society. Nor do they ever mention the women who wrote scripture and ended up being leaders in the church.
No, all of the Bible is not applicable to all times. It is not a flat book like a cookbook, where you can open it to any section and that section is as valid as another. The Bible is a compilation of different literature with an overall progression and story to it. Something that was valid at one time may not be now, something not valid now may be valid in the future.

Yes we are, thats why God gave them. Yes it is. No they mean what they say.
God's truth never offends the faithful. Our motto is that if the truth offends any then may offense abound.
If any has a problem with any of God's word than s/he simply will not make a good Christian.
There is only one chance to get it right. No second chances.

Paul's letters are not Gospel. Paul was never a disciple or an apostle of Jesus Christ and all 3 different versions of his Damascus RD. story are fake. He wrongly thought an Apostle was greater than a Prophet which is why he chose to call himself an apostle.

As well as the Bible being self contradictory, error full, and missing useful information, it is also anachronistic and basically BS.
