This quote is more paraphrased than verbatim. It came from a Mexican wife whose husband had been killed by drug lords. She needed to take her children and leave immediately and decided to escape to Texas. The trek took weeks and rarely did they sleep indoors. In her trials and tribulations, she was trying to explain how you do what you need to do to stay alive. I was somehow fascinated by all the things that were encapsulated in that sentence.

I don't know who penned that one, but whomever it is, they sound like they need to be on antidepressant medications.
I'm barely getting by at the moment, I don't have kids and don't expect to at 40. I can still show the nieces and nephews, ho2 good and how much fun life can be. All it takes is some fishing poles and a trip to a friend's stock tank, and it doesn't take long for them to learn that a bad day of fishing beats a good day of school hands down. Not luxurious, and no dogma. The philosophy of enjoying your free time with friends and loved ones, definitely. But I'm doing what I do because I enjoy living, not for their sake; if I keel over tomorrow, they'll put on their best clothes and turn out for my funeral, and in a day or so's time they'll be back at school among their friends and I'll just be a memory that crops up from time to time.
Were I you, I'd place that quote in the trash can or use it to line a bird cage.
I'm just happy I'm here and with the time that I have, and take great pleasure in having as much fun as I can. Going back to fishing, a niece reeled in a little perch that would fit in the palm of my hand, after a proud picture, we released it; A nephew reeled in, after a great fight, an old Stroh's Beer can. I had the can mounted as a Christmas gift.
Life has a beginning and an end. In between those two, the best you can do is enjoy life as much as you can, do the best you can for your friends and loved ones, and as little harm as possible to others along the way.

Explain single people with no children. Every person does what they need to do to stay alive for different reasons. Often, several reasons. So, in short, I completely disagree and want to burn the person who said this at the stake. And that shall be my reason for doing what I need to do to stay alive--so that I can find him or her and burn them at the stake. Also, heh heh heh heh stayin' alive stayin' alive.

My thought is that this quote was from a very unhappy person. Why wouldn't someone just want to stay alive so he/she can be around for their children?

It means initially apply all fair means, if possible and if you are not able to achieve success, then apply foul means, if found necessary. It is not a compulsion. It is only a alternative suggestion, when every other attempts fail.
