What is the psychology of wearing a hoodie?
A 13 year old relative (a male) has started wearing a hoodie when he is out shoppingwith his father or coming to visit grandparents. The boy has a strange life. As a single parent, his father makes him stay in the house after school, as the father works until 11 PM each night. Weekends the boy is socially isolated, as the father works most of Saturday and all of Sunday.
Is the hoodie a sign of rebellion, depression, shelter from abuse? I m at a loss. Anyone with experience, I d appreciate your comments.

This young man has other "at risk" factors in his life. Stacey's answer fitted best based on the other factors. He hasn't seen his mother in several years, he is small for his age, he lives in a forced isolation environment, has no friends, has never gone to a birthday party or sleepover.

maybe cutting i used to wear sweatshirts all the time when i did that or maybe its a phase but please check his arms and thighs

Update: Some people have some screws loose in their heads. Just because someone wears a hoodie, this does not mean he, or she will cut themselves, or do something else that's very stupid.
I doubt it's a phase. I wore hoodies since I was very young, and this does not mean I am like Stacey.
If you want to take advice from someone who is not sound of mind, well this is your choice to make.
I wore hoodies most of my life. I am a lot older than 13.
Wearing hoodies feels comfortable when it's chilly outside, and it's also a warm type of clothing.
There is nothing wrong with someone who wears hoodies.
I spend a lot of my time alone, but I also socialize with other people as well. Maybe the kid likes to be alone. Ask him, and see what he says.
