What started the tradition of pinching on St. Patrick's Day?

Everyone, where I grew up in New Jersey would pinch you if you didn’t wear green...no matter your race! Or, they would point you out in a crowd, shame you...lol. So...everyone wore something green...participation was mandatory! :)

Never, ever heard or saw that done. In today’s climate, that could be dangerous!

Perverts needed an excuse to pinch sexy wenches.

I am 60, and have never heard of that. It must be a local thing where you are.

If you see someone who isn't wearing any green -- at least a shamrock pin or a barrette or headband -- you're allowed to give them a little "shame on you" pinch for forgetting to honor Ireland, even if your ancestors were not from there. All in good fun.

I never heard of that and I’ve celebrated many a St Paddy’s day.
