Usually those people would have exposure to the big rigs either by repairing them or working for a moving company that owns many rigs. I worked for such a company for many years before I thought about getting my cdl. Class 1. First I had to take the air brakes course which meant night school to take it and then write the test at DMV and pass it.
. Now I asked my boss at my job, saying I want to try for my cdl but need a vehicle. Boss was agreeable and one of his drivers would drive it down to DMV and park it on the side of the road. Then handed me the keys. I don't remember driving the vehicle. (I passed the car driving test, so no need to do that again.) Basically I waited until my appointment and the examiner just had me do the pre inspection and tell him what I was looking for and how to adjust air brakes. Get in the cab and fire it up and tell him what I was looking for while the air pressure was building for the air brakes, etc, etc. I did not drive anywhere. Test was over. I knew the stuff. Class 1 is the same as Class A and it covers all vehicles below it. Car is Class 5 Taxi Class 4 Dump truck Class 3 Bus or long truck with no flex point is Class 2 , Semi trucks with a 5th wheel is Class 1 (and you MUST have) Air brake endorsement. So only class not covered is Motorcycle. which is Class 6 and is a separate test and is endorsed on you license. Numbers or letters, it is all the same schit.
Then you HAVE TO HAVE A COMPLETE PHYSICAL by your doctor. I have Epilepsy (medically controlled) but a good enough reason to deny me the license by the state Government. So, I am allowed to drive personal car and a motorcycle with air brakes and that is it.
I should have done the medical first and saved $ and months.
ah well. The rules have not changed. I also can't fly plane for the same health reasons.

The way it was 50 years ago when I had my permit is the same today. I had a licensed driver come with me to the license road test. My permit allowed that then as it does today.

Just like in practice driving , you get someone with an appropriate license to go with you.

A person can know numerous truths by way of having true devotion to St. Christopher, who is a patron saint of travelers. Another patron saint of travelers is St. Raphael.
