is it safe for my rod and reel to get rained on and what do i do after fishing in the rain??
i have heard and been told that if youre ocean fishing clean your gear either immediately or when you get a chance to clean your reel. i've been fishing ((((( FRESHWATER )))))))) for 25 years. Well last night i bought a swiss raincoat to keep me dry and warm from the rain. i did a google search before coming here and google said that rain could cause health problems for my reel. i have a saltwater penn persuit 3 spinning reel. so what i would like to know is this. my number 1 concern is is it safe for my salt water reel to be rained on and do i need to clean the reel after im done fishing in the rain???

in reality its not safe for most reels, a lot of reels have grease inside the gears to keep from being rusted!

Rinse it and store it somewhere to dry out. Your reel is exposed to water literally the entire time it is in use. Salt is bad for metal, which is why they recommend cleaning it immediately after fishing in the ocean. Fresh water isn't a problem.
It is also good to clean your gear from an environmental standpoint. It is possible to transfer things (microorganisms, etc.) from one body of water to another on your equipment, which is a bad thing. Another good reason to rinse off your stuff after fishing.

It is safe for your rod & reel to get wet., I have accidently dropped my rod & reel overboard. I let it dry out and cleaned it up. I have used it for years since.
