I got the job, my colleague didn't. How do I approach it?

So three of us went for the same job. I was offered the position. Obviously I know to be sympathetic, understanding and not go round celebrating in front of the other two. Naturally I know they are likely to be a bit sad and down about it. Luckily when my shift ends my colleague starts, so besides an interaction briefly over the phone I won't see them until tomorrow.

Can anyone think of any other advice?

Encourage the colleague to keep trying to find the better job and assure them that if you see any job postings, you will pass them on to him immediately.

Are these other 2 guys friends of yours outside of work?  Do you go places together and hang out?

Are either of these 2 other guys going to be working somewhere that your promotion makes you the boss of them?

If you can answer no to both questions then continue to be friendly and if you happen to see/speak to one of them you can say - politely- "I'm sure you will be in line for the next promotion."  And that is it.
