Apartment managers and income?

When it comes to your sources of income... do landlords basically just ask you what your job is, how much you make, and then verify it with paystubs you provide?

Or is it deeper than that? Do they check your income with the IRS?

My dilemma: I have a second source of income that I do NOT want my significant other to know about. (And I’ve never rented an apartment before so I’m clueless to the process)

I’m scared that I’ll be sitting in a room with the room with the landlord/ apartment manager & they’ll ask me “it says here you get income from ____ also” .

I don’t want anybody knowing about my 2nd job except for me and the irs. Is it possible that it’ll get exposed during the apartment rental process ?

How & what they check is 100% up to each individual landlord. Some will just look at your pay stubs but most will call your job & verify.  Most do credit & background checks that can show your additional job too.

Yes it is possible to get exposed. If you cannot trust your significant other then you should NOT be living together! If you are applying for subsidized housing then hiding income is benefits fraud & a federal crime.

There is no way for them to check it with the IRS.  The only way they would know is if you gave them your returns.  That said....if you cannot tell your SO about this, your relationship is not strong enough to move in with them.

If you meet the requirements on your first source of income, this will be fine.

Likely you will have to provide bank statements as well as wage slips, likely a credit reference check is done...... landlords want to know you earn at least x3 what the rent is, that you do not owe debts, don't have CCJ and have a secure job of at least 3 months (but some want much longer) ...so if your one income covers the x3 the rent they are not interested in other income you earn
