Why do men ignore women's dating preferences when it comes to "wanting children"?

Because they don't want to date you as a prelude to marriage. They just want to date you long enough to have sex with you (after which you'll be free to go find someone else to marry).

Unfortunately men are driven by the wrong brain.  They are keen on sex.  In attempting to meet that they can shut out reality.  Overlook anything that they don't want to hear.  Of course it doesn't just apply to men.  Women shut out different things they don't want to hear also. 

Very few men actually want children before their children are a reality.  They have no true empathy for a woman's desire for children.  They "allow" a woman to have children in order to "keep" her.  Many men deeply resent their children when they do arrive, even the ones who love them.  Quite a few actively dislike their children until they're past the toddler stage.  Most men who do have children come to be glad that they had them and love their children once they become old men, and as grandfathers are the men they should have been as fathers.  Only in old age have I heard men express genuine sorrow for the women they defrauded out of children by stringing them along until they were too old to start again.  Women, though, do not want to have children with old men, and actually, I think it's the whole process of seeing their children grow from squalling babies to adults that finally makes it dawn on men that children are a wonder and a part of them lives on in their offspring, not just the genes, but who they are.
