What would you do? Someone wants to borrow my car, 3000 miles, $400 bucks - worth it?
Hi all. My dad wants to borrow my car which has 52,000 miles on it. He'd add about 3000 miles with the trip, it's far.
The thing is I also have to go on a similar trip the week after he comes back, which will be ANOTHER 3000 miles.
That's a lot of miles. My dad is totally willing to rent a car for 400 bucks but was just asking if I wanted to lend him mine and he'd give me the money instead. I am really on the fence. I know very little about cars. What would you do?
Update: I realize also that I could just let my dad borrow the car. I should clarify that he is going to visit my grandfather, who gave him 400 dollars for travel expenses, which my dad was going to use to rent a car because his is terrible. My dad was just trying to be helpful and said he could give me the cash and take my car. The reason I am asking is because putting 6,000 miles on the car in one month is a LOT and I'm really questioning if it's better to have 400 dollars or 3000 miles.
I also should mention that I really genuinely worry about one day trying to figure out how to upkeep for this car when it's old. I'm staying with my parents during the pandemic and it is a pain to try to get dad to help me with such things (though I love my dad, God bless him). I try to help more by paying for things I know they need like food and less with things that make me feel like I am taking this kind of risk. In this case I don't understand what the risk even is -- how bad IS 3000 miles?

Hydrogen peroxide H2O2 kills nanoworms inside facemasks. The elite is faking that they took the real vaccine; the real vaccine will cause spiritual and physical damage. When will the official churches start praying for the false prophet? Orthodox Christian three hand signs are different than Buddhist mudras. Ecumenism = 263 heresies; each heresy leads to hell. Orthodoxy = the only true faith; Roman Catholics tried one cup - one spoon ritual and got sick with Bubonic plague; if heresy enters Orthodox monastery then monks/nuns will get sick with flu/tuberculosis (for instance); Orthodox churches who closed for COVID or had disposable cups/spoons or dipped spoon into alcohol are no longer brides of Christ (now they serve Satan and honor Satan's new COVID religion). Don’t go into UFO to be “healed” by evil demons; demons never do good. SSN is written as a barcode/QRcode; then it's put into a chip; chip is put into vaccine; chipped people are influenced (by super computers) to receive grey plastic card World Passport with no name on it (but when they stretch their hands to get it, gov't clerk presses secret button to administer the unforgivable green 666 tattoo by isotope rays). If you reject mark of the beast (by hiding within a 10-15 people group according to saints Gabriel Urgebadze and Seraphim of Sarov), then your direct ancestors go to heaven (according to saint Vyacheslav Krasheninnikov from Ural). First vaccine shuts off your immune system; second vaccine gives you diseases; third vaccine puts your immune system back and it will start fighting the diseases and will cause death. Saint Paisios from Mount Athos said that the devil wants to deceive the rich with freemasonry, poor with communism, and believers with ecumenism. Elpidios Vagianakis said that there will be seven “mark of the beast” vaccines; reject all of them! Documents are from Satan; burn all the documents that you can find. Electronics will be used to track you. Even old broken unplugged 1970 TV set will show the evil flying antichrist using Tesla's ether. Don’t go into UFO to be “healed” by evil demons; demons never do good; always pray the Jesus prayer or to saints who help right away (like saint Vyacheslav Krasheninnikov according to whom if you reject mark of the beast, then your direct ancestors go to heaven); forgive me.
Source(s): According to the Last Prophet (aka incarnated ARCHANGEL URIEL aka saint healer VYACHESLAV KRASHENINNIKOV) if the last descendant rejects mark of the beast, then his/her direct ancestors go to permanent heaven. To reject mark of the beast, one needs to hide within a 10-15 people group without electronics/documents. Documents are from Satan; burn them. Electronics can be used to track you and to show the antichrist (even on old broken unplugged TV set from 1970's); reject all vaccines, tests, temperature scans, etc.; forgive me. - ?Lv 61 week ago
Let him use the car and forget the $400. I would be more concerned about "hiring out" the car. Let him use it and if he wants to contribute to its upkeep, don't accept more than $100,he's your father

If you need the $400 and don't need the car for the amount of time he's going to use it, then take the money. 3000 miles is nothing for today's cars. They make them a lot better than they used to.

A few years ago my wife lent her parents her vehicle to take on a long journey ( they had a gas guzzling pick-up truck and my wife's car was far better on fuel ).
There was never any discussion regarding compensation. We just made sure our insurance coverage also covered them and we let them use her car.

My dad worked his butt off to send me to college. I will not charge anything if he wanted to borrow my car. I will even give him gas and hotel money.

Unless I had reason to know that my dad was a lousy driver, or that my car wouldn't go 3,000 miles without breaking down, I'd lend him the car for nothing. You know, just as one of those things you do for family. If my dad was generous enough to offer me money to use my car, I'd take the money if he really really insisted. Just because parents often do things like that for their children, as a way to help out without merely doling out cash.
I don't know, if there was an accident and it came out that your dad using your car was not merely a favour from one relative to another but a business transaction, if that would affect your insurance coverage. And I wouldn't ask my insurance company about it. Maybe your dad can pay your next 3 months' phone bill, or something, rather than actually giving you money.

The US government allows 55 cents per mile for business use of a personal car. That works out to $1650.00 in expenses for the trip. Of that amount about $450 would be for gas if dad has to buy it. All other expenses related to the use of the car works out to $1,200.00. And you would not have a car to drive. Let him rent one.

The cost of car ownership is placed at fifty cents a mile on the average. If your dad wants to compensate you for using the car then fifty cents a mile minus cost of gas per mile would be a fair amount.
So dollar wise it is not an equitable arrangement.
That said, if my Dad wanted to borrow my car- I would let him and not bring up money.
If he can rent a car with out having to pay by the mile for the trip for 400 bucks, it would be cheaper for both of you. Plus no insurance hassles if something goes wrong as in an accident or other possible repercussions (unexpected car repairs).

If you rent dad your car, remember your car is not covered under insurance (unless your policy is the same as your dad's). This is because he is RENTING the car not borrowing the car which makes it a business transaction.
If you are getting the same amount as a rental car agency, he should just use the rental car agency so there is no problem with insurance, etc.
If my parents wanted to use my car for whatever, I'd let them.
