Would it be fair, if I told my mom to stop use speaker phone on every call. ?

My mom is home all day (retired and has illness) and she usually is talking the on phone all day everyday. While I don't have a problem with that, she recently became lazy to hold the phone up to her ear, so now she puts it down and puts on the speaker button. It has become really annoying because I can hear all her conversations, but also the other people, on the other side of the phone can usually hear background sounds (me and my brother walking around, making food or going to work) so they complain and my mom after the call yells at us and tells us to be quiet and that we are disrespectful. My mom is on the phone all day, so she constantly wants no sound and wants us to literally go away when she's on the phone cause of the speaker but I don't understand why she can't just go off of speaker, so my brother and I can actually go around the house and do our things. We also pay the mortgage, with our rent.

Would It be unfair or rude if I asked my mom to stop using the speaker phone all the time?

Just to let the one person know..who said to get a Bluetooth set. My mom is talking on a home phone. She doesn't have a cell phone.

You pay the mortgage with your rent.  What?  You pay your mother to stay in her house?  You contribute toward the mortgage.  Who pays utilities, food, incidentals?  Here's a thought.  MOVE OUT OF MOMMY'S HOUSE and what she does and where she does it won't bother you.

Be glad that #1.. you have a mother. #2 that she will talk to you. She will not always be around.  Just deal with it.  But maybe say something like.. .. mom.. its difficult to hear you when you are on speaker.

Just communicate your wishes and go from there.  I get it.. my mom is the same way.. but she is 89 and she will not be here a lot longer.

Learn to appreciate what you have, because tomorrow it may be gone.

it seems like your mom doesn't have much else to do except talk to friends on the phone. And it's more comfortable to use the speaker phone than to hold the phone up to our ears.

I'm not sure why you and your brother can't just comply and go on with your lives.  This doesn't seem like some dire problem to me

She is the one being rude and disrespectful.  I don't get why old people think respect only goes one way.

You and your husband both approach her together and tell her that if she wants to speak on the speaker phone that she is to take it into her room to talk.

Tell her you no longer want to be privy to her conversations on the phone and that it is your home as much as hers and that she needs to respect your privacy by not having her friends hearing what you are saying in your own home.

Stand your ground.  If she gives you sh*t for it, tell her you will be looking into a nursing home for her if she continues to disrespect you and your husband like this.

Get your mother a Bluetooth headset.  They are usually pretty good at filtering out background noise.
