Why has NZ sevens got backwards so fast?

I asked a few weeks back if Teichs should retire as Coach and let another step up and many loyal people said no, can i ask now, Why is it that countries like Kenya have been able to develope a lesser pick of players from there National Rugby Pool and we seem to be heading backwards. We haven't performed yet once this 7 series and as a NZ 7's supporter I am really concerned that we are in the state that we are. We can't win everything every year but we aint even in the picture to conpete.

Update:

smitty99 - if the same thing happens next year, my ship as well as the NZ ship will already be sunk. Just to make point of your questions, I think we have gone backwards because we are yet to win a tournament, we have managed to lose to Kenya (who aint that bad) but come on we still use this excuse of not having a big pool of players to choose from, how big do you think Samoa, Kenya, Japan, Scotland or Argentina have? Rugby is our life in NZ, we live and breathe it, other countries have no where the luxuries we have with player selection, so it can only really be the preparation.

Update 2:

Sorry Smitty99, just one more thing I noticed you wrote, you are correct to say that the tournament was started to develope other teams, but in any competition it doesnt mean that NZ needs to be the same good old team, we should've been the inovaters of 7's along with Fiji, but instead it looks like our stradergy has reamained the same, hold the ball and play a physical game? the future of 7's will always be in speed and that is a fact, NZ have a lack of this and have don so for a few seasons, there was no way we could've continued to win with a lack of speed.

Why is it that you think we have gone back? Mate, the whole idea of this 7's tourney was to bring countries up to a level of playing rugby with the big boys. It is a huge success, and if you look at our talent pool, it is not that deep as Super 14 is being played.

Sure, it is a bit of a shock this year, that we are not even competitive....but it's just a year.....if the same thing happens next year, then I am jumping on your ship!
