Is there much difference in ice fishing and freshwater fishing?

Do you have to use a different kind of pole? What about techniques? Bait? Also what's the best fish to catch in ice fishing?

I do both a lot. For icefishing you need an auger or ice chisel to make a hole to fih through. I use about a 3 ft ice rod with a spinning reel. I also use jigs with ether wax worms or minnows.

I catch panfish walleye and pike through the ice on a regular basis.

Ice fishing is usally done on a frozen freshwater lake...

But I understand what you mean. Smaller rods are used because of the diameter of the hole in the ice. I suppose a normal length spinning rod would work for ice fishing, but you'd be pretty far from the hole. Techniques are either jigging a small jig tipped with a minnow or using live bait. Best fish to catch is determined by the area, but most places where water freezes over, people catch walleye, yellow perch, pike, lake trout, and I believe the occasional musky.

Well there is know difference in the water but You will use a smaller pole that is about 2 foot long. I usually use minnows, red worms, night crawlers, or maggots. You will usually catch the following: Crappie, bass, walleye, perch, and bluegill.

    Good Luck Ice Fishing!!!
