do i have to be an Opera singer to get into a vocal performance or singing major?
hi, i'm looking at majors right now and all i'm seeing for singing is vocal performance and usually it talks about opera. i'm an alternative rock singer with some broadway influences, i know i have talent and have taken lessons before but it seems like all the colleges are looking for Opera singers rather than normal singers. is there a program in colleges for people like me? are vocal performance majors only for opera singers? if so, what should my major be, i want to be in a band and tour but i think a strong music education backround would help.

As a classically trained soprano and pianist, I am going to be perfectly honest with you.
Most colleges do not want any type of rock or pop players, because the majority of people making it out there in the world in a band don't even have a degree. If you want to get a major in vocal performance, learn how to sing and be open to what you sing.
I never wanted to be a classical, choral singer until... I joined a choir. I have learned how to sing shows twice a day and hit a high E, and be ready for more performances tomorrow. That healthy style of singing, and a knowledge of theory, are aspects singers need no matter what field they want to actually perform.
Before closing off completely to Opera and Classical, give it a try. :) If you don't like it, major in Vocals anyway - doesn't you mean you have to sing Classical as a profession.

Where do you live and what state. Google Berklee - Boston, it is one of the best Music College's in the world, mainly because they have the best teachers. But believe me it is extremely hard to get into as they have people from all over the world auditioning to be accepted. If you do, you will come out with knowledge that is totally overwhelming and you will have met Muso's and singers who are like minded. Oh yea and take the songwriting course if you can. Good luck.
