How does a genetic marker detect a gene responsible for an inherited disease?

The wikipedia explanation isn't enough for me to understand it. How exactly does a genetic marker identify the gene/ genetic mutation responsible for an inherited form of cancer?

it tags the gene as one that is either mutated or otherwise altered from normal sequencing. the actual identifications aren't made by the markers, they are made by scientists and doctors- the markers just help them know where to look for things that aren't quite right.
