I'm 42 and I've never ever flown on a plane, is it an experience one MUST have or is it overrated somewhat ?

I've never left England, I've never even gone to Wales or Scotland.  The furthest out of my home town in North London I've been is Birmingham, and boy that was one experience I don't look back on with fondness!

I've heard of places called 'Manchester' , 'Liverpool', 'Sheffield', 'Newcastle' etc

funny places in England but also places where I imagine life is slow and dull.  Do I wish to venture out to these perilous places ? not really.  I'm quite happy in London.

I should mention I've been down to Portsmouth btw.  That was okay.

Whats flying on a plane like really ? is it fun ?

Well why don’t you catch a train or something going for a day trip out somewhere else like Manchester or Leeds. I’m a londoner and have been to all the places you’ve mentioned.

Imagine being on a Greyhound bus but instead of streets passing by outside you see clouds. And when you look out the window you see land in a checkerboard pattern below but which you can just as easily see from photos on the internet. The air is stale and you might hear a baby crying. You also have a tray built into the seat ahead of you that you put down for TV tray foods, a plastic cup, and you get to ask the air host for coffee, tea,  pop or orange juice. Or maybe peanuts. Or maybe nothing. And you stow your luggage in the compartment above you. And you stand up and sit down to let other people by when they have to go to the airplane bathroom. And you probably just listen to music on your personal device and take a nap or read the entire time anyway. And you fasten your seat belt and hope you don't fart or smell anyone elses.  If you are happy where you are you aren't missing anything and you are also reducing your chance of dying in a plane crash. You can see the world through Google. It is especially uncomfortable to ride on an airplane if you are overweight. And if you're stuck in the middle you wonder who gets the elbow rest and you worry about cramping the person behind you if you lower your seat back and you secretly hate the person in front of you who lowers their seat back in front of you.

The plane ride itself isn't all that great if you're squeezed into economy on a long flight, but spending tie at the destination can be. It's not a mandatory experience but can be worth the effort.

I would not call flying "fun."  I did a bit of traveling when I was young. And whenever  I have  needed to get somewhere and it's too far to drive, I flew.  The seats are small and uncomfortable.  The food is lousy now.  I guess first class food is good if you can afford  the ticket.  With all the great travel videos available now on TV and youtube, I see no need to go anywhere anymore.

P.S.  I would have liked to visit London when I was younger but didn't have the money.  I'm in the US.

It’s about as exciting as going on a bus, but one where you have to be at the bus stop 2 hours early and once you’re on , you’re there for anything from 2-18 hours.

Oh and there’s nothing to see out if the windows and you’ll have minimal personal space especially leg room if you’re taller than 5’8”.

Of course it isn't something one MUST do. And people who fly regularly soon get over the thrill, but I'd say it's worth doing at least once, if only so you know what people are talking about when they talk about flying. The first time or two could be interesting. After that, maybe not.

The best description of flying I've ever heard is that it's a bad restaurant at 35,000 feet.  I probably flew a dozen times before I was 5.  I've flown a hundred or more times since.  The only ones I liked were the two where I scored cheap upgrades to 1st class.  Other than those two flights, they've all pretty much sucked.  But I love to travel, and hate spending a lot of time actually traveling.  Planes afford the quickest way to get where you want to go.

only "fun" if you can fly First or Business Class- Economy is not fun at all.

You Can Travel within the UK on a Train if you want to "Get out" and see more places.
