Are lessons the obvious way to get better at golf?

Update:

I would like to just belong on a 18 hole golf course to start with, like under 100. Am tired of "picking up" when I do play golf.

    I've never had a formal lesson in my life and I play off a single-digit handicap (as low as a 2.3, currently in the 5-8 range).  To improve, start with your short game (inside 100 yards & putting) and work from there.

    the teachers will just tell you stuff you've already heard a thousand times before. only way to get better at golf is to keep playing.
