How can you tell if cat wound is infected?

My kitten (about 2 months old) got stung by a bee. It's right jaw got really swollen and the cat became lethargic. The swelling has gone down and the kitten plays now but for some reason it had an open wound where the swollen area was.

It's fur shed in that area and pus came out. Right now I looked at the kitten and it looks like there is something white in the wound. Is the wound infected, and what can happen if it is? Also, any suggestions as to why the kitten got the wound in the first place? I assume the kitten scratched there to get the stinger out, or the other kitten (about the same age) bit it where the stinger was.

Obviously I'm going to try and get the cat to the vet, just wanted some info about it. And, for another question, how much does it generally cost to get infections cleaned up? I live in Ohio.

Thank you.

There are several symptoms that you may see if your cat’s wound gets infected. Signs of infection include:

Redness, Swelling, Discharge (often thick, yellow or green in color), Odor, Pain and fever.

It’s important to note that some redness, swelling, discharge and pain is normal, but these symptoms will usually reach their worst point within 24 hours of the pet’s injury. After that point, the injury should be healing and improving; if the redness, swelling, discharge and pain associated with the pet’s injury seem to get worse, this is a sign of infection.

In addition, a wound should never have an odor. If the wound smells bad, this is a sure sign of infection.

He will likely benefit from a course of antibiotics.

Depending on the severity of the wound and if anesthesia is required (the kitten might not be co-operative due to the tender site of the wound), you could be looking at around $150 - $250. The actual cost will also be determine by which vet you go to (vets for less or cats expensive :)), you can ask for an estimate prior to the procedure.

    Signs A Wound Is Infected

An infected wound will be red and swollen around the wound site and if not treated immediately may start seeping gunk. They often will be slow to heal.

I can't tell you about local prices but if it's just an infected scratch then you will be looking at a consultation fee and a course of antibiotics. Here that would be about £35 (UK obviously). If it looks quite serious and the vet wants to check it's ok he will ask you to do a check up visit in about a week. My vet only charges £10 for this re check and in the numerous occasions I have taken cats to the vets a recheck has only been done 3 times. Most of the time the vet says bring him/her back if you have any further problems.

Your mom needs antibiotics but should be fine. Many people do not realize that cats have a lot of bacteria in their mouths, more than dogs. That is why so many cat bites get infected. This is information I got from my vet once when my cat bit me in the vet's office while I was getting an injury he had looked at. The vet immediately had me wash my hand with green soap and told me that if the bite got red or swollen, to go to the doctor.

take the cat to the vet. If you can't afford that, get a friend to help you. Look at the wound with a magnifying glass. The stinger might still be in there and perhaps you can get it out with tweezers.

You can use Neosporin on the wound. Good luck

I would bet that it was a cat bite or other injury, not a bee sting. Pus means an abscess which needs to be cleaned out and antibiotics. It may be as much as a couple hundred including the medications.

the longer you wait, the more it is going to cost and the more serious it will be for your kitty.

Puss would have been your clue that the kitty needs to see the vet.

The cost for a small wound would most likely be the cost of an office visit and probably 10-15$ for antibiotics. If you let it linger it could need to be professionally cleaned out and fixed which could be several hundred dollars.
