Tips for first 4-5 hour drive alone?

I know that a 4-5 hour drive isn’t considered a long drive, but the longest I’ve ever driven by myself was for an hour. My plan is to leave my place around 4am and get to my friend’s place around 8am/9am, and spend the day with him, and then drive back home. I plan on bringing energy drinks (coffee upsets my stomach). Any tips on how to make this a successful drive?

Four hours is not long enough so that you would be falling asleep at the wheel. Your main concern is the driver safety and not getting bored. So you might try to do the drive in in a manner that you avoid the rush hour and listen to a good audiobook on your mobile device.

Going there and driving back the same day? That's ,forgive me, just plain nuts. It could also be a danger to you or others, if you succumb to fatigue while driving.  And while the pandemic rages, why would you go anywhere like this in the first place?

The drive is four to five hours.

Really you know that or are guessing using some map thing that gives a time going top speed the entire way with no stops?

For planing purposes you will need at least one stop for a toilet break about hour three for most.

At the same time might have something to eat or drink , take a short walk/stretch , top up the fuel and be on your way. 15-30 minutes added to your schedule.

My plan is to leave my place around 4am  MEANS WHAT

You wake up at 3:55 dash out to the car and go?

or at Midnight pack the car have something to eat take a shower and then go?

The driving there part is easy. So you regularly wake up at 4:00 AM do a days worth of stuff and go to bed at ??? Midnight 2:00 AM or tuck in at 9:00?

9 hours of driving is BORING in particular the come home part.

MOST accidents happen the last 25 miles as you rush to just get home. PLAN for a nap on the way home an hour or two is enough. You can finish your sleep when you get home later alive.

Falling asleep and driving off the road can be deadly or just very expensive.

Have your stuff ready to go or packed in the car. Go to bed. Wake up just before departure shower dress and go. Breakfast is down the road.about 6 or 7 depending on rush hour traffic can be a good time to wait it out while you have breakfast.

A light dinner take some snacks for the road home.WEAR sunglasses as much as you can ALL DAY. The setting sun and headlights are hard on your eyes coming home reason you saved up some eye protection during the day.

Energy drinks are not some miracle stay alert forever type of thing.Crap happens in seconds at high speeds you are not fully alert just awake. Take them for the going home part. IF you feel you need them for the morning journey your home trip will not be very good.

EIGHT hours or more just sitting in your car seat is BORING and is most of your day.

A kind friend would allow you some time to NAP before sending you on your way home. A NAP before departure does not mean horizontal dancing.

Depending on conditions in the places you're driving through you may need to pack a lunch and bring some container to urinate into. Rest stops and the like might be closed.

Stop every hour or so, get out and walk around for 5 minutes. Get enough sleep the night before. How many energy drinks could you possibly need or consume in 5 hours? Take some food, light food like yogurt or fruit. Depending how late you plan to leave, it might not hurt to have a short nap in the afternoon.

Frequent stops.  If you feel drowsy at all, even just a little bit, pull over and take a 10-minute nap.
