Dad's BP in these two months....?

In the beginning of January my dad's  (70 yrs old) systolic  BP was ranging from 170 to 160 ( diastolic - always normal). The highest - 180 (but usually below it). I didn't immediately take him to the GP as he never had a case of hypertension, and the sudden rise was due to consumption of oily food.

Our goal was to alleviate the pressure as much as possible without the need of medications. Two and half months later on his BP now falls within 140 to 149.

Recently, bought the parents an Omron automatic BP monitor. It varies slightly ( +/- 5) from the actual equipment ( sphygmomanometer) used at hospitals.

Should I continue the exercise and diet regimen at home or take him to the GP?

140 to 180 over normal is the definition of a wide pulse pressure (you can google that term if you would like) which could be caused by atherosclerosis which is not exactly out of the ordinary for senior citizens.  But there are also other factors that can manifest as an elevated SBP.  Good for you (& him) for the diet & exercise & BP checks.  But hypertension is known as the silent killer for a reason.  Blood work would be a great idea to get an idea of your dad's lipid profile, & if way out of parameters, a statin drug is an easy fix.  But as I typed, hypertension is called the silent killer for a reason, & regardless of the cause, the quicker it comes down, the better chance of a long to longer life, & there are multiple meds that can achieve that goal.

    That was the long answer.

The short answer is:  yes, get him in to see a doc.

Get him to a doctor. He should be 120/80.

Take him to the doctor. There is a variety of excellent blood pressure drugs available. 140 is still high.

Oily food would not spike his BP like that, he should continue to monitor it, but only 1 time, not a series, and at the same time perhaps twice a day. Keep a record

He sound have gone to the hospital 8 weeks ago!!!!!!

you don't know that the increase was due to oily food... it could have been due to a clogged artery that is still clogged and his changed diet is disguising it now.
