  • Removal of Polynomials From Raw Aperture Flux Time Series?

    While examining some data about the new discovery of Kepler-22b, I noticed a plotted data set described as a "flux time series after [the] removal of a second-order polynomial for each segment and normalizing the data of each quarter by the median" (see Figure 1 at http://kepler.nasa.gov/Mission/discoveries/kepler2... ). I'd like to better understand what this means. Any guidance, links, or direction would be greatly appreciated.

    I understand a flux time series is, of course, a measure of the light arriving from the star as plotted over time but I do not understand the process of removing polynomials and normalizing the data or the value of doing these things. My assumption is that this involves some sort of reverse local regression.

  • What is the line resistance in a standard in-city power line?

    I'm trying to calculate the maximum current in the power lines near my house but I can't even find what material they're made of. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Standard current in power lines?

    I've been looking for quite some time for the standard current in power lines in a large Utah city. (Not the main lines - the substation to home lines.) Does anybody know what it is or where I might find such information?

  • Need an adjective that describes the idea of being "related to time"?

    I'm trying to describe a "famine of time" but I can't think of an adjective to go in front of "famine." I thought of a "temporal famine" but that doesn't quite have the meaning I'm trying to convey. Any ideas? Please help!

  • How does a "practicing homosexual Christian" justify their lifestyle in the face of 1Cor. 6?

    Certainly Heavenly Father loves every one of His children (including those who commit what He has defined as "sin"). The issue for me isn't whether or not God loves those who practice homosexuality. Of course He does. (John 3:16-17)

    I want to know how you justify yourself in the face of a statement such as

    "Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind...shall inherit the kingdom of God." (1Corinthians 6:9-10)

    ***[The following is not part of the question but a response to a common response to such questions.]

    Homosexuality in any form is a sin as much as having sexual intercourse outside of marriage is.

    Never forget the love of the Lord in all of this, however:

    "The law is not made for a righteous man, but for...the disobedient...for them that defile themselves with mankind." (1Timothy 1:9-10)

    He loves you regardless of what physical or emotional difficulty you have. Those difficulties, feelings, or chemicals do not justify sin, however. As with all men and women (myself included), the call is to repent and be baptized and to seek holiness. (see Acts 2:38)

    "And again I would exhort you that ye would come unto Christ, and lay hold upon every good gift, and touch not the evil gift, nor the unclean thing." (Moroni 10:30)

  • Can a galaxy's light be redshifted into the infrared range?

    The faster a galaxy is moving away from the Earth, the higher the redshift. Does the redshift ever enter into the infrared range? Would this have any bearing on the background radiation observed across the sky?

  • How to create dot followers in Word 2003?

    I'm trying to create a table of contents in Word 2003 and I don't know how to create dot followers in front of the headings that lead to the page numbers on the right. What's the easiest way to do this? Here's kind of what I'm looking for:

    Title Stuff Etc............................................105

    Subtitle Stuff Etc..................................107

    Next Title Stuff Etc....................................110

    and so forth. The titles are flush left and the page numbers are flush right.

    How would I create those dot followers and make this whole format work?

  • Java text input question...why won't anything come up?

    So I wrote this program. I want to get a text field that a person can write text into. If you notice at the very end, I gave it a shot and I've tried a few other things. I can't even get a text box to appear. Help! Give me something I can go off of...

    Thank you so much!

    import java.awt.Color;

    import java.awt.Dimension;

    import java.awt.EventQueue;

    import java.awt.Graphics;

    import java.awt.Graphics2D;

    import java.awt.Toolkit;

    import java.awt.geom.Ellipse2D;

    import java.text.NumberFormat;

    import javax.swing.JComponent;

    import javax.swing.JFrame;

    import javax.swing.JTextArea;

    public class windowName {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

    EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable(){

    public void run(){

    SimpleFrame frame = new SimpleFrame();

    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);

    frame.setVisible(true);

    }

    });

    }

    }

    class SimpleFrame extends JFrame {

    public SimpleFrame(){

    //The following four lines create the screenWidth and screenHeight variables

    Toolkit kit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();

    Dimension screenSize = kit.getScreenSize();

    int screenWidth = screenSize.width;

    int screenHeight = screenSize.height;

    //The following lines are the properties of the frame itself

    setSize(screenWidth/3, screenHeight/2);

    setTitle("We're going to take your name!");

    setLocation(screenWidth/3,screenHeight/4); //These numbers center the window on the screen

    getContentPane().setBackground(Color.black);

    getContentPane().setForeground(Color.white);

    //The following 2 lines create a new panel (which will be used to draw a circle)

    DrawComponent component = new DrawComponent();

    add(component);

    }

    }

    class DrawComponent extends JComponent{

    JTextArea text = new JTextArea("This is a test.",20,20); //Why isn't this creating a text field??

    }

    }

  • Java Question - Background Color in a Window?

    Alright, so I made this simple little window program:

    import java.awt.Color;

    import java.awt.Dimension;

    import java.awt.EventQueue;

    import java.awt.Graphics;

    import java.awt.Graphics2D;

    import java.awt.Toolkit;

    import java.awt.geom.Ellipse2D;

    import javax.swing.JComponent;

    import javax.swing.JFrame;

    public class windowName {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

    EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable(){

    public void run(){

    SimpleFrame frame = new SimpleFrame();

    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);

    frame.setVisible(true);

    }

    });

    }

    }

    class SimpleFrame extends JFrame {

    public SimpleFrame(){

    //The following four lines create the screenWidth and screenHeight variables

    Toolkit kit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();

    Dimension screenSize = kit.getScreenSize();

    int screenWidth = screenSize.width;

    int screenHeight = screenSize.height;

    //The following lines are the properties of the frame itself

    setSize(screenWidth/3, screenHeight/2);

    setTitle("We're going to take your name!");

    setLocation(450,200);

    setBackground(Color.white);

    //The following 2 lines create a new panel (which will be used to draw a circle)

    DrawComponent component = new DrawComponent();

    add(component);

    }

    }

    class DrawComponent extends JComponent{

    public void paintComponent(Graphics g){

    Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D) g;

    }

    }

    Now I'm having some problems. If you noticed, I tried to set the background color of the window to white. That's all I want: a window to pop up with a white background. However, this doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure why! (As a side note, the rest of the stuff on there is what I'll be adding on soon.)

    Why won't it work and how can I make it work? Thank you so much for your time!

  • Java PrintWriter - What's wrong?

    I have the following lines of code in a program...everything is kosher in terms of imports, exceptions, variables, etc.

    PrintWriter writer = new PrintWriter("Record.txt");

    writer.println(firstName+" "+lastName);

    All I am trying to do is write the two string variables to a text file. This should do it as far as I can tell but it only creates the file and nothing ever gets written to it. What am I doing wrong?
