  • is it a planet or a star ?

in a night sky, naked eyed, using binoculars or an amateur telescope, how could i distinguish clearly between planets and stars?

i know that planet will move much faster through the night sky while stars are relatively stationary comparing to planets, but is there any other method to verify whether the observed object is a star or a planet?

    Thanks !

  • what would you choose ? (just for fun)?

You are working at a train station, and while a train is passing by on track1, you notice a little far ahead on track1, a group of people crossing. If the train continues on its way it will kill them all.

However, you can just pull a switch to make the train change tracks and save the group of people, but on the other track "track2" is a man crossing! and if you use the switch, that man will be hit by the train.

    so what would you do?

A- nothing and leave the group of people to their faith?

B- pull the switch, save the group of people BUT drive the train to hit the one person?

its not a trick question or anything, its a question usually asked on job interviews. just wanted to share.

  • Quiz for Ramadanites (just for fun) OK?

Suppose you are inside a room with only two doors, one leads to a very good place, the other leads to a very bad place.

On each door there is a guardian, one of the guardians ALWAYS tel the truth, the other ALWAYS lies and of course you don't know which one is who, and not necessarily the liar is on the bad door...

You can only ask ONE question to one of the guardians, and your objective is to figure out which door leads to the good place to use it and get out of the room.

    what would be the question?

  • Ramadan Users _ inspired by a question from @Serenity?

if you are walking by night time on top of a bridge that crosses over a railroad track, and bellow it(the bridge), you see a train passing through and on the other side (other side of the bridge not @otherside the user) you notice that there are several people crossing the railroad.

if the train continues to move normally then the several people will be crashed and killed and you have no way of making them run because they are pretty far... however on the bridge, a one single man is passing by, and you can push him toward the train and therefore make the train brake in order to save the several people from a certain death.

will you push the one guy to save the many? or will you leave the many people to their faith? why or why not?

  • did you notice that?

    it is said that:

    smart people discuss Ideas (theories/concepts).

    regular people discuss things (objects).

    dumb people discuss other people.

by applying this to the questions (religious questions) here on R section, you can see that very few are about theology or principles of Islam. while most of the questions are about persons, like: (was Mohammad this, was Abu-Bakr that, was Omar this etc...)

maybe i haven't been on this section for too long as many of you, but am i right?

because i see some really good questions asked by honest people that deserve good answers, and some really nasty question asked by people who only want to give themselves a reason not to believe.

  • suggest a good and easy reading for a new Muslim plz

    hi all,

a friend of mine came across a man who is really interested in accepting Islam.

that man was convinced on his own, but because the nature of his job requires him to travel most of the time, he can't really get in touch with Muslims to get information. so my friend asked me to send him an English translation of Quran.

but i thought it may be a good Idea to send him a printout of the basic things of Islam and how to become a Muslim.

I don't want to risk and give him advice on my own, cause i could be wrong, and im no scholar too. so if you know any good stuff i can print out and send to him, ill appreciate it. (in English please)

  • telescope problem help plz?

i have an 8" Mead Light Bridge.

it came with a 26mm 2" wide Field eye piece, it works perfect.

however, i bought two additionnal eye pieces 12mm 1.5" and 9mm 1.5", but they seem not to work correctly with the adapters or the holders on the telescope, its like they are too far even when i turn the precision knobs to the maximum toward the telescope.

this is what i did :

i try first with the 26mm

    - i took away the 26mm eye piece.

    - i put the 12mm or the 9mm inside the 2" to 1.5" adapter

    - i put the adapter on the telescope in the place of the 26mm 2" eye piece

i see very fuzzy picture, i tried holding the eye piece with my hand without the 1.5" -> 2" adapter and i could get a correct picture. i think the adapter keeps the eye pieces a little bit away from where they are supposed to be. but since the adapter came with the telescope, i don't know what to do?

is it just some matter of calibration or what?
