  • How Do I Find Relevance In An Impermanent Universe?

I have been studying the concept of impermanence for eight years now. And I feel I came to understand how attaching ourselves to things that will eventually change is a source of suffering. I recognized I have a significant difficulty not attaching myself to things and feeling sadness when those things change. It has been a major source of some considerable personal struggle.

So, now I am back trying to re-understand impermanence in a different way, a way that is not coming to me so easily. While I do understand that everything changes, the thing I am having difficulty with is understanding the relevance of... well... anything, since it is all impermanent anyway. Why is a sunrise relevant if someday they will stop? Why is a work of art relevant if someday it will turn to dust? Why is a song relevant if someday there will be no one to listen to it? I think I may know the answer, but I wanted to open myself up to others' wisdom to see if I'm on the right track.

I understand those questions are considerably deep, and I assure you I am not teetering on some existential precipice, but my lack of understanding has affected my ability to derive pleasure from many things. It's in the readings I have found about impermanence that has helped me better accept that truth, but I have not found guidance as to how to really see the impermanent things in my life. So your feedback is very welcome.

  • How safe should I assume my murky well water is?

Two days ago, we had a significant amount of rain in a short period of time. Since then, we have had a cloudy red tinge to our water from Virginia's infamous red clay. So, I am assuming this excessive rain water has gotten into the well. This is the first time the well has turned cloudy red. We rarely have any major issues with the well after heavy rains. We sometimes get grey sediment from heavy rains, but I understand that is natural to the well. The well itself is about 100' deep and only about 4 years old. The septic is 100' away. We are also on high ground so rain water drains away from our property. I have not had a chance to bleach shock the well yet since this happened, but my wife in talking to our local health department today has gotten the impression the water may be safe to use except for drinking. She's run a load of dishes and filled our child's humidifier with the water from the well. Because I am not yet certain what is going on with the well; excessive rain or a cracked casing, and I haven't sanitized it, I am not sure doing the dishes and filling the humidifier were good ideas. Am I overreacting, or do I have just cause to be concerned that we are using potentially contaminated water?

  • What is the significance of hanging shoes from a power line?

I will admit that I am not very knowledgeble of hip hop culture. I am not very interested in the music or the style just from a difference in taste, not that I have a particular dislike because of racial or cultural differences. I am not a hip hop basher, it's just not my thing personally. But I saw someone wearing a t-shirt representing the Brooklyn Nets that shows the word BROOKLYN across the front with shoes hanging from the letters. I later heard the shirt is being marketed as a means to show "pride in your borough". I am aware of the urban legend around hanging shoes on power lines, but not having grown up, or otherwise have lived that culture, I want to know what other people think about what message the Brooklyn Nets are trying to convey by selling this shirt. How does that shirt represent Brooklyn as a culture, as a community in general? What is Jay-Z trying to say by marketing this product for his team? How should Brooklynites that did not grow up in this culture take it (like my family -- white, immigrant, middle class, grandfather grew up near Ebbets Field)? I just want to be educated on something I don't understand, and how it is seen as a positive symbol to represent a professional sports franchise on this shirt.

  • How Do You Remove The Center Dashboard Storage Bin From a 2005 Subaru Outback?

I have a 2005 Subaru Outback (3rd generation '05-'09). I damaged the door that covers the storage bin that sits dead center on my dashboard, flanked by the center air vents, and has the clock display directly below it. I want to pull this assembly out to see if I can repair the door, but I do not know how to remove the assembly. I need to know if it is just clipped in, or if there are screws somewhere. I could not find screws when I looked, but I didn't want to start prying on things until I knew for sure how this thing comes out.

  • How Does the Crew of an Apollo Mission Open The Transfer Tunnel Between the CM and LM?

I have never been able to find a clear description or procedure written or pictured on how the docking port between the CM and the LM on an Apollo mission was opened to allow movement between the two crafts. More specifically, I wish to know how the probe and drouge are moved to allow the crew to use the tunnel, and what part of the docking port is actually involved in securing the two crafts together. I once thought the probe part opened up and the legs held on along the sides of the tunnel, but that doesn't look like what is actually happening when I see pics of the tunnel itself. I would appreciate something that describes the procedure to open the tunnel.

  • How to fix the plastic clip that holds the end of a throttle cable to a lawn mower carburetor?

I was trying to remove and clean the carburetor on B&S 6.5hp lawn mower engine when I snapped the little plastic clip on the top of the carburetor that the end of the throttle cable attaches to. I can't see how to take the piece out. Is it replaceable? Please tell me I don't need to replace the entire carburetor to fix this 2 cent piece of plastic!

  • Why Won't My Lawn Mower Stay On?

I have a Craftsman 22' walk-behind pull-start lawn mower with a B&S 6.5hp engine. However, I cannot keep it running for more than a few seconds after priming. After I prime it, it starts right away with no issue, but there's something keeping the fuel from flowing, and I have no idea how to find out what it is. I know enough to replace the air filter, spark plug and change the oil, but that's about it. If I could find a good video or pics and good instructions, I can work on just about anything. I just need something that shows me how to do it and what it looks like. Thanks for your help!

  • Can the problem causing the rotten egg smell from my car also be the cause of the loss of gas mileage?

My 2005 Subaru has been smelling like rotten eggs lately after a relatively hard acceleration (pulling onto highway from a full stop), but I am also loosing gas mileage, about 3-5 MPG on average highway. I figure I may have a bad O2 sensor or the cat converter is going bad, so I'm planning to take it in later this month once I get my taxes back so I can afford it. But in the various anecdotes I have heard about other people having the rotten egg problem have never mentioned gas mileage problems. But I don't always get gas at the same place, so I have been getting gas of varying quality, but it seems to not matter, the smell is always present whenever I accelerate hard. Is it common for a car giving off that smell to have poor mileage, or does having the poor mileage help narrow down the problem? Despite the smell and mileage, the car's performance is good. Good acceleration, smooth running. Would appreciate a little insight into this problem. Thanks!

  • Can the Toyota Highlander handle driving on soft beach sand?

At some point in the near future, I need to consider a larger vehicle for my family. My wife is dead-set against a mini-van. So we are looking at SUVs. I grew up in a family of Jeep Wagoneers, the last one being a stout 1979 model that handled the beach ramps of North Carolina like it was a paved road, that we sadly had to part with 8 years ago. But I am not impressed with modern Jeeps. I'm also not interested in any of the gas guzzling V8s out there. I am looking for something with permanent 4WD, but I need a balance between good road driving, decent efficiency (at least 25hwy), and with enough off-road capability to get me through the kind of sand you'll find at Oregon Inlet, NC without worry. The research I've done so far suggest the Highlander has the best chance of meeting my needs, but I would feel better with some practical input from anyone who's actually taken a Highlander on the kind of beach sand I'm likely to encounter along the US mid-atlantic coast (VA/NC).

  • How can I protect my family from harassment?

My wife and I recently decided to leave an organization because we noticed somethings we weren't comfortable with. We just wanted to move on and agree to disagree and leave peacefully. However, the leader of this group called my wife to discuss the situation. He said several things that were offensive, and it kind of became personal, at least for us. We don't think he realized he crossed the line because neither of us reacted right away, and we are not confrontational people by nature. My wife chose to de-friend the leader and the other members of the group she had as friends on Facebook, and I chose to do the same. But both my wife and I got separate emails from this person; the one to my wife was kind of pleasant and contrite, while the one to me was accusatory and judgmental, in reaction to being de-friended. We both felt it was pretty infantile to get so bent out of shape over a de-friending. We just wanted to be left alone. Despite not wanting anything further to do with him or this group, I chose to reply. I cited our offense to the comments he made to my wife, and for the tone of the email he sent me. I did not use any offensive or accusatory language, I just said I didn't appreciate what he said to my wife in the call, and to me in the email. I also told him to stop contacting us. Two hours later, my wife gets an email from his wife which was pretty much a "what did I say?" message. We are not paranoid people by any means (and trust me that in our line of work, we know what real paranoia is), but my instincts are telling me there may be an attempt from other people from this group to try to get us to talk to them. But we don't want to, we just want to be left alone. How do we protect ourselves from harassment from both the leader individually, and from other others in the group? Nothing has happened to this point, but my gut tells me we need to be ready in case someone pushes the line a little further. What can we do legally? How would we prove it? We just want to be left alone, but we fear we are contending with aggressive people, and need some advice on how to deal with them without becoming uncivil ourselves. Thanks for any positive comments.

  • A possibly bandwagon fan needs guidance...?

At the risk of getting really slammed, I am going to admit that I may be a bit of a bandwagon fan. I am not very proud of it, but I feel I have valid reasons to like the teams I do. I guess I need a little prospective on this issue.

First off, as a kid I didn't really like sports at all, and I didn't have a relative that pushed a team on me. When I got older, I started liking sports more. My best friends as a kid were both born in Baltimore, and I watched games with them, so they became a major influence. When I was about 17, I finally decided to follow Baltimore, one, because of my friends' influence, and two, they were the closest team to my home, and they grew on me over time as I grew into liking sports in general.

Starting in about 1999, I did start liking the Red Sox, but I still liked the O's more. I think I was beginning to like the entire sport more, and I appreciated more teams. But I started traveling to Boston frequently for the first time around the same time the Boston Red Sox began their success in the 00's (and when the O's really sucked). I became enamored by their leadership style, their stadium, and their fans. I was also falling in love with the city of Boston as well.

At the same time, my frustration with the O's was at its peak. I was feeling myself drifting away from the O's. And then the last couple seasons, I have pretty much flipped to liking the Red Sox more. Even still, I have not gone to see the Sox play in Baltimore since because, one, I don't like out of town fans out numbering home fans as a rule (and I didn't want to contribute), and two, unless you're a kid, it's not very cool to wear the colors of both teams.

I also felt some justification when I learned those friends from childhood from Baltimore had also changed their loyalty to the Red Sox. Perhaps the fact they now live in New England was a major factor, and gives their switch a little more justification than mine. But I remember them being very big O's fans and cheering them on in the '83 World Series. So the people who clued me into the O's in the first place had also switched their loyalty.

But then I saw this last series between the two that left the Red Sox out of the playoffs. I wanted the Red Sox to win, and was disappointed that they lost. But I couldn't help but feel joy for the Orioles who played pretty darn well.

So now I am conflicted. I DON'T want to be a bandwagon fan, but I really love both of these teams. I feel I have to split my loyalty to find some peace with this, but I don't know if I really want to do that. And I don't know if I'll be taken seriously as a fan.

When it really comes down to it, I am a fan of the sport first and foremost. I gravitated to Baltimore primarily because of geography and childhood friends. Then as I matured as a person, I realized I appreciated a better run team like Boston more than simply the team closer to where I live.

The thing is, I feel stuck. I can be accused of giving up on Baltimore, and I would accept there is truth to that. I just got tired of the loosing. It stops being fun. But I still want to see them win. If the situation this week was reversed, would I have cheered on Baltimore over Boston? I think I have to say it is likely.

Bottom line -- I love both teams, and I want to love both teams, but how do I do that and still keep some credibility as a fan? Maybe I just have to do what works for me, and forget other people's opinions (which I do most of the time anyway). I welcome THOUGHTFUL and INSIGHTFUL comments.

  • What is going on with my knee?

Last November I twisted my knee pretty good. Doc sent me to rehab. Took about 4 months, but I was able to play sports again. Since then I've had no real problems with it. My range of motion is just a little less than before the injury. But in a recent sports event, I turned sharply and my knee gave out. But it didn't really hurt. About 10 minutes later I was able to run on it. It feels a little less stable than it was, but had no real problems walking normally. I've always wondered just what damage I did to the knee. Did I tear my ACL or did I nick a menicus? Never did an MRI. Based on my info, and 10 months since the initial injury, what is the mostly likely reason that causes me to still be prone to my knee giving out (but with no pain and only slightly reduced stability)?

  • Tips on tracking a fly ball that's gone above the lights?

Played softball for the first time last night in quite a few years. I was playing right field and I was trying to field a popup that landed in shallow right-center. The ball sailed above the lights and for a second or so I lost track of its movement because it was in the shadows. I ended up wiffing the catch because I misjudged the landing. I thought is was going to land on the lip of the infield, but it ended up in shallow right-center, and I didn't charge it enough. I never had an issue with this when I played when I was younger, but maybe because the fields I played on then were much better lit. Are there any tips that may help me better anticipate where a ball is coming down should that happen again?

  • Can a couple working opposite shifts manage child-raising without daycare?

My wife works third shift and I work a pretty traditional 9-5. We have a 2 month old daughter. We are trying to do without daycare as long as we can, but we aren't sure how practical this may end up being. Does anyone have experience raising an infant while working opposite shifts? Were you able to do without daycare? If not, at what point did you start using daycare? If you didn't use daycare, how did the parent that worked third shift managed their sleep and daytime interactions with their child?

Have you ever had a leather binder and had to peel a photocopied document off of it, and when you do, it leaves residue of the print all over it? I have a leather binder and it is now covered in the residue of a photocopied document that was stuck to it. What is the most effective way to remove this residue without damaging the leather? I tried rubbing alcohol, but no luck.

  • Why won't the Facebook App on my iPhone work?

Just got an iPhone 4. I loaded the Facebook App. It logged in okay the first time. It worked okay when I went back to it a few times. Then it started randomly logging me off. I looked up online if other people were having issues. Some of the recommendations was to unload and reload the app. I did all that, and now when I go to log in, it just sits there saying it's logging in, but doing nothing. What's going on? How do I fix it?
