  • How do you get melted plastic off a glasstop stove?

I put a loaf of bread wrapped in thin plastic on top of our stove yesterday. When I came back the plastic had melted off and is now "one" with the stove.

I've tried pouring boiling water on it, tried scrubbing, I even tried turning the stove back on high (and succeeded in filling my flat up with noxious fumes!)... help!

  • Where's the best place to start learning logic?

Okay so I've really enjoyed getting into metaphysics lately, but I find that I'm handicapped because I can't think critically about the logic they are using to argue their views - due to the fact that I've never learnt about logic, fallacies etc [apart from the basic ones].

I've already studied for 5 years [in another field] so going to university isn't an option - does anyone know a good place to start learning logic? [Resources, websites, books etc]

  • Uploading a difficult DVD format to youtube?

I need to upload a video onto youtube. It's a short educational DVD we had made professionally, but when I open the folder up [on the CD] it's comprised of a bunch of .BUP, .VOB, and .IFO files -- none of these work when I upload them onto youtube.

How do I get this figured out? Do I need to use some kind of converter programme?

  • Analytics Question: Is google the way to go?

My company has spend a lot of money on our site. The web developers configured google analytics to run on the site, but I think they only did a basic job - because there's a lot of areas where it doesn't seem to give a depth of info.

For instance, the site runs a flash banner at the top of the screen, and analytics doesn't seem to offer any info on how often these are clicked.

We're looking at increasing the depth of info we can get from analytics, but we're wondering if it's better to get our web guys to spend a bit more time [and $] making google analytics fit with our site better, or should we purchase a software program to do it for us? Considering we've spend $40k on our site, the fact that analytics is free isn't TOO much of a factor.

  • Apostrophe question?

"With 11 year's experience in the industry..."

I'm checking my workmate's copy, and she's written this line of text. In this case, shouldn't the apostrophe go on the other side of the s? - ie. "With 11 years' experience in the industry..."

  • Is there any situation when it is correct to have the comma OUTSIDE of the quotation marks?

I mean I understand that it's: "You'll never catch me Batman," said the Riddler.

But is there any situation where the comma can exist OUTSIDE the quotation marks without self-destructing and tearing the entire space-time continuum apart?

  • Microsoft Word's Spelling?

I live in New Zealand, and we have a different spelling for several words than those uncultured, crass Americans ;-)

For instance, recognise, organisation are both correct spelling [it's called English].

Anywho, the spellcheck on Word allows me to change the dictionary options to NZ English, but immediately changes back to the US version. Even the IT guys at my office can't figure out how to make it stay on the NZ dictionary. As I am a copywriter, this is quite annoying.

Does anyone know how to change the dictionary on Word and MAKE IT STICK???

  • In-line or in line?

"...build a profile to bring it in line with those of..."

Is there a hyphen between in & line [ie: in-line]

...you know, the sad thing is that I'm a copywriter - I should know this

  • Can you recommend any good philosophy texts?

I recently read "Existentialism and Humanism" by Jean Paul Sartre and I loved it. I've read a couple of other similar texts since.

But the problem is, most of them are too hard. I've tried Plato, Schopenhaur, and Kant [among others] - the question is: does anyone know any texts that are "user friendly?"

In saying that, I don't want any "beginners guide" type things, just ones that are easier and less archaic to start off with.

[No pretentiousness in your answer would be appreciated]

  • Word document question?

I want to crop an image on Microsoft word, by a couple of milimetres. No matter how much I move my mouse, the image crops by a minimum of 10 millimetres. There's no in-between -- no matter how slow or delicately I move the mouse.

Come to think about it, the same thing happens when placing images onto the page and trying to move them around, and also when moving columns to the left or right. You can either move too far, or not at all.

Does anyone know a way around this? Or even why this is?

  • Is there a decent joke-website out there?

I've looked and most of them are lame! Not a joke-site, but a site full of jokes if you catch my drift.

  • How can America justify using depleted uranium ammunitions?

The amount of birth defects in Iraq has gone up by something like 600% since the first gulf war, and yet the US military still used depleted uranium. How can this be justified?

Im interested in getting a perspective FOR the use of this ammunition that doesn't involve - "cause we want to kill lots of those sand *******" which is a pretty pathetic argument.

  • I'm 22 with strong ADD tendencies. I've never taken medication and don't want to, but caffeine?

I've heard that caffeine can be a great help for people with ADD. I recently found some caffeine pills called NODOZ that say each pill contains 100mg of caffeine - equivalent to one cup of coffee.

I've been taking two pills in the morning and it's been great. It's not that i'm on a noticable caffeine buzz, it just seems that my thoughts are a little less fractured and haphazard.

My question - from a physical/pharmalogical viewpoint - is it safe for me to continue to take these pills indefinately?

I sleep like a baby at night (presumably they wear off over the day) and I don't feel ''speedy'' so It doesn't seem like I'm going to get any caffeine version of amphetamine psychosis.

Any educated opinons would be welcome.

  • Guys: When you're with a chick, do you constantly consider your options?

I'm with a chick who's GREAT. I mean, seriously great -- In 6months not a single argument, she's a nympho&we have great chemistry, we have the same attitudes about everything, our friends get along -- perfect in every regard.

But whenever I'm not around her I spend a considerable amount of time weighing my options -- whether I should dump her and find someone hotter -- she doesn't have the best body in the world.

I'm generally not a shallow person, I was just wondering -- can anyone relate?

And please no a-hole moralizing 'you're so shallow' bla bla -- I've been with her for 6months so if I was so shallow why would I have started going out with her if it wasn't for her amazing personality?

Is this normal, or am I not listening to myself -- that I'm not attracted enough to her?

  • Is there actually anyone out there who belives Fox's "Fair and balanced'' claim?

I've been studying Fox for university and it is by far the most biased and untrustworthy news source in America. But surely there must be some people who don't see it that way.
