I come from New Zealand, I am 20 years old. I like riding horses and have been doing it for most of my life, I learnt most of what I know about horses from my grandfather, who is almost 80 and still riding horses! I am currently planning a trip to England. I am very keen to travel to EVERYWHERE at some point in my life! I also love music and play guitar and flute as well as sort of abuse many other instruments. I guess thats me in a nut shell.....

  • Getting money back from landlord?

We rented a house that was advertised and rented under the belief that it was a 4 bedroom house. One of the rooms was a sleep out not attached to the house. After we moved in it was discovered that the sleep out is not live-able. It is damp and full of mildew and there are holes in the roof. Not to mention no source of light. We talked to the landlord about this and she claims that she warned us the house was a bit of a **** hole before we moved in. My question is, if we were to have someone certify the sleep out as unlive-able, would we be entitled to a quarter of our rent back as we are paying for four rooms.

  • how do you keep your horses?

I have noticed that a lot of people get mad and defensive when they encounter some one who holds different views about how to keep horses. I think that all over the world people keep their horses in different ways, but that doesn't make it the wrong way, as long as the horse is healthy and happy.

For example, I live in New Zealand. My horses are kept out at grass 24/7 all year round. In winter I feed additional hay and rug them and in summer my horses get a chaff mix if they are doing hard work and a fly sheet if there are a lot of flies around. There are not a lot of stables in NZ, although I think this is changing as we are being greatly influenced by Europe.

I mostly ride on the beach, in the hills and forrest and in winter I hunt my horse (although in NZ we hunt hares because we don't have foxes). I have never ever ridden my horses in an arena or put them in a stable, infact until I came to europe, i had never ever even mucked out a stable! But both my horses are healthy and happy.

In NZ I think Clydie X TB are fairly popular horses as they are generally good all round horses, with calmness, strength, stamina, strong bone, and levelheadedness which is required in eventing, trekking, hunting, jumping etc, which is all very popular in NZ.

Im just wondering, where do you come from and how do you keep your horse? what is popular in terms of breeds and disciplines? and do you consider there to be a wrong way to keep a horse?

I would love to hear about the different ways horses are kept around the world because maybe I will learn something new, which is always a good thing!

  • Can someone please give me information on what exactly a roarer is?

I am thinking about purchasing a gorgeous talented horse that has been scoped and diagnosed as a grade three roarer. Can anyone tell me what this is and how it will affect the horse? Also anyone out there who has owned a roarer before can you tell me how you dealt with it, and what kind of vet attention would it need, eg: regular vet attention or not? I know there is a surgery available to fix it but I was wondering how a horse would cope with out it?

    Thanks for any help

  • tips on riding a smooth demivolte (half circle, incline to track) at canter?

My instructor has started teaching me to ride a demivolte, but I am struggling to get my horse to maintain a steady canter rhythm through the half circle part as well as make it a smooth circle. He keeps breaking to trot at the turn and I need some tips on how to ride this properly and smoothly before my next lesson so I can work on it and hopefully get it better. Thanks for any help!

I know how cold it gets there in winter but will summer be warm enough for shorts and sandals and singlets or should I take a lot of warm clothes and just a few 'summer' clothes?

Also whats in fashion over there at the moment?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

  • what would a general day at the stable be for a working pupil?

I'm thinking of doing a working pupil course at a place like Trent Park Equestrian center. What would a general day be like? Also is there a certain standard of knowledge and ability that you need before they would consider taking you on? Is there anybody out there who has done a working pupil course and would you recommend anything or anywhere to train?

  • are riding references required when applying for a job with horses in England?

I'm planning to go to London for a five month working holiday and am hoping to work with horses there, not necessarily riding but just working with or around horses. Should I get my instructor to write me a reference? and what should I ask her to talk about? Obviously i cant tell her what to write but what should I ask her to cover? Also any tips on applying for jobs with horses in England, what are they looking for? Like i said, i dont mind if i dont get to ride as long as I get to work around horses, i dont mind if all I have to do all day is muck out.....

    Thanks for any help!

  • can you make me a diet and exercise plan?

I would like to lose weight, I currently weigh 182pounds and am 5'9.

I have access to an elliptical strider, horse riding, a 20minute Pilate's work out and an hour long Pilate's work out.

I love fruit and veges, but am a vegetarian including fish and chicken.

what would be a good weekly diet and exercise routine that will help me to lose weight and keep it off... I would like to do this steadily rather than speedily. I think I have realistic goals and would like to get down to about 145pounds.

    HELP??? Thank you!
